Manuel Fernandes:

Exactly what we need, a creative player who can compete with Arteta aswell as do a job outwide. Needs to add consistency to his game but playing week in week out will help that, he just needs to be loved.

We could get him for around 8 million and he'll probably sign last day of the transfer window. It's going to happen.

No one's told Manuel by the looks of it;

Miguel - Could be perfect for us for a season or two while Davey searches for a younger solution to our right-back problem. My only concern would be that he may see a transfer to us as his career beginning to wind down. Hopefully it being a World Cup year would be motivation enough for him.

Lucas Neill - Offer him £35k p/w and a decent signing on fee. If that's not enough for him then sound. If it is enough then he'd offer good, experienced cover at right back and center back for no transfer fee.

Jonas Gutierrez - Looks a good player whenever I've seen him though apparently not much of a goal threat. Would be an improvement to our right-side, geordies seem to think of him as a hard-worker. Would surely be available at a decent price.

Sylvain Distin - Shoot me, I think he's decent. Could provide good cover while Jagielka is out. If paper-talk of a move to Villa for £5m is true though then leave well alone. Not worth the money at his age.

Adam Johnson - Looks a prospect, don't think he'd cost too much money.

Kieran Gibbs - Though he's played most of his senior football at left-back I understand he's been a winger throughout his development and he still looks best suited to that position to me. Has lots of pace and looks good with the ball at his feet. Not sure how willing Arsenal would be to part with him but I can't see him being first-choice there in any position in the forseeable future. Could be worth a cheeky loan enquiry.

Oh yeah, this ship has already sailed, but my City-supporting mate was raving about Gelson Fernandes when he first signed for them, full of (perhaps premature) comparisons to Patrick Viera. He's only 22 and has 15 caps for Switzerland. Signed for Saint-Etienne for a measly £2m a couple of weeks ago. Could've been a good addition on the cheap, I think center-midfield should be a bigger priority for us than most believe. Stylistically a Rodwell-Arteta partnership is the only properly balanced pairing we can field at the moment and I don't expect either of them to start more than about 25 league games each this year.
