Can remember him starting out as a younster at Chelsea. Even though it was only highlights on MOTD, always looked decent then. You dont captain your club at 18, gain 80odd caps for your country, play in Italy by being a bad player. RIP Sir, you will be missed.

I always liked listening to his opinions. Always remeber a few years ago when he comentated on the spurs cl qf against real Madrid he kept going on about "stay on your feet"

It was obvious he'd had a few too many san miguels during the day. Sky never had him back..

There used to be a poster on kipper who wrote to qpr when he was a kid about football and ray Wilkins wrote him a hand written reply talking about his time in football and how you can improve.

Spoke volumes of the man

Loved listening to him talking about the game as you could hear the passion and love he had for it coming through with aplomb.

Gutted he’s passed so suddenly, enjoyed listening to his breakfast appearances with Brazil of late.

No news is probably good news.
Alas not true this time.

Apart from being a top class midfielder, one of the likeable things about Wilkins was his sense of humour. This used to come across well when he did the co-commentary on Football Italia in the early 90s.

One anecdote I have of him happened when we were playing QPR at Loftus Road in the 93/94 season. Incredible game - we were 3-0 down at h/t and were down to 9 men with Southall and Rideout sent off early. We got it back to 3-3 but lost 4-3 to an injury time winner; from ecstasy to despair in just a few minutes.

Anyway during the game there was a lengthy delay as their keeper was lying injured on the goal line at the away end and Ray stood by him as he was having treatment making sure he was OK. Our fans decided to pass the time with an extended version of 'there's only one baldy b'stard' directed at Wilkins. When he was sure the keeper was OK he stood up, looked at our fans with a huge grin on his face, and pulled up his shirt to reveal the hairiest chest imaginable. Cue the end of the chant as most of us burst into laughter. I had the utmost respect for him after that.

RIP Butch. One of the good guys.
