So if we don't indiscriminately call as many things racist as possible, we don't acknowledge racism exists? I'm almost certain there's a middle ground here

I honestly don't believe this is a huge problem in society, whereas racism is. I'm sure you have a story about being thrown out of a butchers for ordering black pudding or something to prove me wrong

So because, in your opinion, indiscriminate accusations of racism aren't a huge problem in society, people should be given carte blanche to go scorched earth on anything subjectively perceived as racist? I think that's demented personally, but each to their own imo

A lot of the discourse around Sterling became really negative once he sacked off Liverpool to win trophies.

Their bile is the root cause and I don't say that lightly.
carragher hinting at that here, along with neville indicating the timeline a bit too. Of course the overall issue is bigger than anyone club or sport even, but their cult like attitude to such events doesn't help anyone

I know football in England and Europe, is a sport watched, played and followed by mostly the working class, who tend to be uneducated, but why is football so backwards in England/Europe? Things like racism, misogyny, homophobia, antisemitism is rife.....all are things which is non-existent in other sports.

It has made laugh that some have tried to use the fact he was frequently rated bottom on the BBC Ratings app during the World Cup as proof that society itself in this country is determined to pick on him.

Not because he was diabolical all tournament, totally and utterly crap in every game? He's picked up his form now for club and country so fair play but seriously, trying to paint people who simply don't want lick his arse as racists?

I agree with him for the stand he's making, the Daily Mail is a scumbag tabloid with deeply racist and bigoted people at the top but don't get silly now. Calling a player crap should be acceptable regardless of their race, football should never and will never be a Utopian paradise where everyone watching justs and watches politely whilst expressing no real emotion.

So, the working classes are 'uneducated, racist, mysogynist, homophobic and anti-semitic'.

The sooner the working classes are kicked out of football the better. Absolute scum.

On a football level... Sterling has just replaced Rooney, who replaced Beckham, who replaced Gazza etc etc of that one individual the English press needs to pick on for the national team failures.

That isn't racist. That's just scapegoating.

Just switched the tv on for the first time today....first thing I see is John Barnes on sky sports talking about this and how it needs to be eradicated...which is correct.... but where was he when the Liverpool team came out wearing Suarez t-shirts ? Selective in his opinions

Barnes defended Suarez, saying: "As much as we will say ignorance is no excuse, ignorance is an excuse."
He said that "cultural differences have to be taken into consideration".

Speaking on BBC Radio Merseyside : "From a cultural point of view, [Suarez] has been backed by people from Uruguay saying the word he used is not deemed as a racist term."
He continued: "As much as we will say that ignorance is no excuse, ignorance is an excuse."

Barnes, who received 79 England caps, continued: "When Manchester United play Liverpool and 10,000 United fans are saying 'you Scouse thieves', I'd like them all to be banned."
"And Liverpool fans too, when they say 'you Manc or whatever'. So where are we going to draw the line? Racism has to be zero tolerance but this is now a witch hunt."
