Liverpool striker Fernando Torres faces scan after a battering in Sunday’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester United, while Javier Mascherano’s ban could reportedly be extended.

The Reds host their Merseyside rivals Everton on next Sunday and will be without Argentina defensive midfielder Mascherano at least for the crucial game with the fourth-place competitors as he was sent off for two bookable offences yesterday.

Boss Rafael Benitez, who replaced Torres “trying to protect him” towards the closing stages of the defeat at Old Trafford, will be hoping that the Spain international has not suffered any serious injury problem.

Benitez said: "Torres had some knocks on his ribs and ankle - a lot of knocks and a lot of kicks. I was just trying to protect him. The doctors will do a scan, and we will see.”

Meanwhile, according to media reports today, Mascherano has put himself in a tight spot with the FA as he refused to accept Steve Bennett's decision and leave the pitch and as such is likely to face severe sanction.

Hope the greasey arse licker is out, He's about the only dangerous player they have. The spanish Gypo.

Bollocks he's out I have a feeling Rafael would play him with one leg if he had to in this derby. their other strikers are woeful.
