When you've had the calibre of players they've had over the years (be that their forwards, midfield or defenders) then it's more acceptable.

Van Nistelrooy, Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Hernandez, RVP and others over the last how many years. They're going to bang enough goals in.
but that's where they spend their money. It's only been recently (Ferdinand onwards) that they've spent anything on the defence/keeper. most have been cheap options who've turned out to be good.

the whole thing about the 'class of 92' wasn't about the star players, but it provided enough 'just above average' players that the transfer budget could be spent overloading the front line.
 
Stephen Caulker would look a decent buy. Decent age and would be available.

also English too certainly better than alcaraz + if they go down would
be cheap'ish i reckon
