No drink??I can officially announce that the Irish wont be there..watch us "struggle" in the group games..vault me if im wrong :-)

Great planning lads, win hosting an event that's supposed to bring in a load of tourists and then try and do things thereafter to keep them away.
No no no. Try to do thing to maximise income! The greedy government gets.

Hopefully it backfires and there'll be empty stadia. Although I'm boycotting the corrupt event entirely, I might now just switch on* to see if they're empty.

*unless, as greed escalates, its pay per view by then.

Qatar.

Would you go if they gave the booze away free?

No? Me neither.

When is this world cup? January or something? It's come to something that a place like Qatar actually compromises its already squalid human rights record by getting into bed with FIFA, who are nothing more than a big bunch of pigs with their snouts in a trough full of cash which came at any cost.

Couple of mates of mine went to the playoff game against Iran in 2001. Alcohol is banned throughout the entire country. They were hammered the entire time they were there! Every taxi driver was offering to take them to the equivalent of a shebeen every time they got a cab. It'll be something similar over in Qatar. I still wouldn't take a free trip to the dump

Do you remember when the hype about how dreadful was, and usual rabble were deterred from going? And we ended up with one of the best world cups in terms of both on and off the field - a very enjoyable tournament indeed.

Well at the rate Qatar is putting people off, then on the above rationale, it may be the most fun world cup ever.

OK- fun built on the skeletons of slave labour and bought via a crooked bid process, but y'know fun is fun is fun.

While I hate the whole concept of the World Cup in Qatar, in December-January.

The World Cup is generally something that causes poor treatment of labor, a net loss in terms of spending vs money generated. The event has just been generally executed poorly in recent years, much like the Olympics. Countries without adequate infrastructure spending billions for an event that lasts a month is just backwards. Stadiums get used for a World Cup then go unused or host teams that can't fill the venue.

Roads, bridges, and things are reorganized to handle traffic patterns that will exist for a month. It's all a waste. So while their government is awful, and it's hard to back them. By my own beliefs, I can't blame any host nation for trying to maximize earning potential because FIFA essentially bends them over.
