What a weird comparison.

The Russian videos I posted were of a lawyer getting arrested for talking to tv and others who appear peacefully protesting in the street getting charged by baton wielding riot police. That isn’t what happened ar the Capitol.

And for all its faults US criminal system is not the same as the Russian one, the people arrested at the Capitol will have legal representation and many are already out on bail whereas I don’t fancy the chances of many of these protesters arrested of seeing home for a while, if ever.

The comparison is fair. A failed politician's mouthpiece rabble rousing an insurrection. A large mob lined up towards the duma. You're right though, that didn't happen at the Capitol. The US security services shamefully allowed their government to be stormed.

You're right again about the Russian criminal system as well. Perhaps they should take a lesson from the US one and have succesfully Epsteined Navalny when he was behind bars for one of his multiple convictions for fraud or embezzlement.

Putin is a despot and I'm no supporter but Navalny is a shill that Russian authorities will be cracking down on before it becomes another situation like the US backed overthrow of the Ukrainian government.

We’ll have to agree to disagree about the comparisons. Congregating outside your federal buildings I see as a fair exercise of your rights to free speech and that would have applied to the Jan 6th protesters as well (even as I disagreed with their core message) but many instead chose to storm into the Capitol itself.
 
Just watching the News of the latest Navalny protests and I find it quite interesting to compare the authorities reaction in Moscow and the police in the US at the height of the BLM protests, especially when you think journalists were being targeted in the US.
I don’t pretend to understand ins and outs of how the Russians operate, and by and large I see Putin’s regime as corrupt etc, but at face value and the with the western narrative on Russia, my expectations of the approach to policing these demos really seems to be reversed.
Edit Early days yet I guess, plenty of time to for the Russians to get medieval on the protesters and journos I guess.
