PES 2010 – how could I ever have doubted you?

Impressions of PES 2010

Better than FIFA?

Maybe it was the continued innovation of the online play, particularly the 10vs10, or the vastly improved feel of the action. Or perhaps it was the dubious pleasure in playing as Southampton - but FIFA 10 has certainly seduced me recently. And as a total package FIFA 10 is hard to beat. But after a weekend playing PES 2010 it has quickly became obvious that on the pitch – ultimately where it matters most, of course – PES simply plays the more satisfying and entertaining game of football.
The caveat here is that I haven't played online yet. Online play isn't live yet and probably won't be until the week of launch. For me this is crucial. Last year's appallingly convoluted offering – want to play 2vs2 with a friend on the same team? Good luck – really killed the game for me. Have Konami fixed it this year? We'll find out very soon. But if it is the same menu-ridden and laggy mess of last year then FIFA's siren call will become too much.
But on the pitch things are looking very very good indeed. Regular players will know how satisfying PES feels and 2010 is as blissfully expressive as ever. Aerial through balls are a particular delight but first time passes and accurately weighted crosses are all a joy. Le Tissier style 40-yard cross field passes are possible too and the game encourages and rewards you to try out new moves.
The 360 degree control – less heavily marketed here than it is with FIFA but a first for the series – makes a difference too. Initial discomfort soon gives way to a greater feel on the pitch, with plenty of room to improvise as you create space for a cross or shot.
The action feels slightly slower than 2009 but is still much faster than FIFA. A typical PES game is more akin to the recent 4-3 Manchester derby than the continentally paced FIFA. Yes, this is almost a complete reversal of historical trends. But FIFA 2001 – or whenever – goalfests were never this entertaining.
The game feels slightly easier though. I played on regular settings and won the Champions League easily – an 8-0 aggregate win over Man United was a highlight – by using simple tactics of through-balls and double-tap crosses. Whether this is ease is intentional – or maybe I'm better than I thought? - remains to be seen but regular players would be better off starting on at least professional level.
So what else? Well finally – finally! – Konami seems to have got the in-game presentation right. Licensed music and well designed and legible menu screens? Yup, it's a world away from PES of the past. The Champions League licence is central to the game and the menus give you all the encouragement you need to get started on your campaign. Maybe next year we'll get the Johnstones Paint Trophy too? Another nice touch is the muted celebrations from the crowd when you score away from home. The crowd noise generally seems more realistic too – I'm sure they cheered when I cleared a header off the line.
Then there is the Community mode, a new addition to the series. It is essentially a long term record of your results against friends. Great. But currently it is offline only and pointless for anyone old enough to live away from their mates.
So, 48 hours in and I'm thoroughly enjoying PES 2010. Yes, I'm crossing fingers that online is finally sorted, but when it comes to the basic on-pitch action there looks to be a clear winner. I ended my FIFA 10 review by saying PES had it all to do. Well, after a weekend with PES 2010 I'm very confident it has succeeded. Sorry to have doubted you old friend.

CVG via PSM3 magazine mentions that Fifa 10 marginally pips PES 2010....by 1% in its review. PES 2010 89% and Fifa 10 90%. It does say PES is back to its former glory but it gets knocked down mainly to gloss and and its less organic feel. It seems the two games are arguably neck and neck this year.

The first PES 2010 review is in via the pages of PSM3 Magazine, which crowns FIFA 10 (very marginally) this year's winner.

"After the arcade excesses of PES 09, [PES 2010 is] a welcome return to simulation roots," says the mag, which awards PES 2010 a respectable 89% - 1% less than FIFA 2010.

"If you were disappointed by PES 09, and converted to FIFA in exasperation, this is a welcome return to form," it says.

However, PES 2010's positives are riddled with 'buts' and minor gripes, says the mag: "The Champions League is a major coup but its barely evolved since 09, and the poor licensing means that only about 80% of the teams are accurate.

"The Europa League is another key addition but its only playable in Master League and not standalone. The licensed soundtrack includes classic tracks from DJ Shadow, Stereophonics and Black Kids but it feels a bit two years ago in contrast to FIFA 10s edgy, if slightly incongruous, line-up."

PES 2010's new 360 dribbling is called "misleading" ("its more 16-way movement, but way more subtle than PES 09") but PSM3 compliments the game's general slower pace of play, which it says liberates slower, physical players like Berbatov while still allowing you to dribble past a man with the likes of Messi and Ronaldo.

Player likenesses are another unqualified success pointed out in the review. Ironically, Wayne Rooney looks better in PES 2010 than in the game he officially endorses, says PSM3, with details going right down to freckles and blemishes on his Shrek-like face.

"To be clear, [PES is] still arguably the finest multiplayer game in the world," reads the review. "The killer twist is that FIFA 10 now treads similar turf, but with a more organic feel, superior animation and more next-gen touches".

PSM3 said it's yet to test the two games' online modes, so the verdict is still out on that front.

PES 2010 is out on October 23. For the full review pick up PSM3, or buy it online right now and have it
delivered to your door.

For the rival's verdict, checkout the
FIFA 10 review.

Its also amusing that PES gets the players looking right compared to its Fifa endorsed offspring - especially about Rooney hahaha.

I cant find the scans (they've been taken down for league reasons) but someone on a forum summerised -

PES 2010 - 89%

FIFA 10 - 90%

They say in single player the ML of PES 10 shades the MM of FIFA 10.

Also they say PES 2010 has made the biggest improvements over the two games, but state they felt FIFA 10 was ahead after last year, therefore didnt need make as big of an improvement.

They say PES 2010 graphics and player models far surpass FIFA 10's zombie-esque renditions.

They also say that they scored PES 2009 way too high last year, and got stung by the pityful online play. They feel FIFA have improved their player individuality. ( It's still for me light years away from PES 2010 though IMO )

They say the ML is brilliant and where they will spend most of their time, but they said they will considering 'cheating' on their beloved PES 10 as FIFA is very good this year.

They say that PES 2010 is bug free, no more glitches, cheap cutback goals etc, no more freezing.

They also say that people that got dis-illusioned with PES 2009 and it's arcade nature will feel a real return to form with it's latest simulation based offering.

They say it's all down to preferred tastes and even the most loyal PES fans may give Fifa a go this year. And likewise, the Fifa men in the PSM3 office who have looked upon Konami's recent offerings with disdain have been curiously checking PES 2010 out.

The Master League does sound more in depth this year. I've read you can take control of the reserve/youth team also, as well as taking part in official Champions League and Europa League competitions.

Nice review. Tempted to have a splosh on it, but playing 3 footy games at the same time would kill me.

Im a sucker for the edit mode on PES. Makes the game most personal to me. Last years I had buckets of fun adding "the baby's not yours chant" I've got on MP3 as Everton's chant when they played the RS.

Now you can do more chants? Good stuff.

Just been reading up on arle forums....

The whole Fifa 10 v PES 2010 debate seems to be basically -

You want a fun kickabout with mates or just a casual league/matches get Fifa 10.

Want something a bit more indepth and tactical get PES 2010.

Other than that, its personal taste.

FIFA is tactical. It has custom set pieces.

And if you feel it isn't tactical, you are playing at the wrong level

Custom set pieces? WOW. That it?

How about changing how individual players play mid-game? Or how your midfield defends and attacks, how they spread out. Or how far you play your defencive line, how far your wingbacks go up the pitch...all mid game and instantly?

They're tactics. Not if you can lay off a free kick to someone else to bang it in.

I like Fifa. I buy Fifa late in the year. Im just a PES man as I find Fifa a bit shallow but fun to play (even if the players all play the same and its just kick and run footy with shooting like kicking a penny floater). But PES is just more personal and in depth. There's nothing more satisfying that making a team of no-marks into super stars on PES master league.

Even individual players? EG take Gerrard's long range shooting off so he wont get into those type of areas? Pull Alves back so he doesnt over-lap Messi? And instantly as in - press pause, move a few sliders, up-pause and see the changes? Couldnt do that on last years Fifa.

Even then though, you can basically pick up Fifa and not do all them and still win 5-0 with a few through balls. With Pro is becomes something that you need to do, especially on Master League.

Fifa for show, PES for a Pro.:) But I've always said, its a matter of tastes.

I would have agreed with that once upon a time, and if pes has returned to former glory, great, even though i just shelled out for fifa 10.

But ive joined a growing band of pro-evo to fifa 10 defectors for a reason.

Fifa 10 plays like pro evo should if it hadnt gone sideways.
To my mind the synthetic lightweight feel of the gameplay of years past has been eradicated, and it feels much more satisfying now, like the way i remember pro evo used to!

I'm loving the be a pro mode.......
