There's not much shame in that. I don't buy the whole they haven't shown up in Europe narrative. I think they've just been a bit unlucky.
The absence of regression is not a positive. It's maintenance of the status quo. If that fulfills your ambitions then great. I for one would like my club to aim higher.
Regarding the sale John Stones , the issue that none of the media are addressing is who he should be replaced by at Everton.
There is a very solid argument that at 40m Everton or any club should take that enormous windfall and run. Every player has a price and there is always the chance that John Stones is at his peak now. The mistake that Chelsea made is treating Everton a a little club and making Everton prove that it would not be bullied...which it did in great style.
But, when Merson and others say to sell John Stones, what happens then ? , Mori has arrived at the club and there will almost inevitably be a lengthy settling in period.
Browning, Galloway and Pennington are not ready yet to play centreback in the premiership every week.
So , does Merson tell us to go with what we have , or sign somebody untried and untested(ironically which is what Chelsea have now done).
If the pundits take their Chelsea hats off for a minute and think about Everton ,who do we sign and do we use up a large slice of the money from the sale of Stones to bring in a player that just may not be as good.
Money in the bank is alright but rarely wins you premiership points.

Merson struggles with the basics of the language , Cascarino is even worse, McEnally headed one or two balls too many in his time , Henry seems very pleaseant and quite intelligent but knows what his employers want and is prepared to go along with it.
