Possession heavy football will never work at Everton

That’s a contributing factor of why we are so static.

One of the reasons we appear so static is the default setting of all teams now to have two blocks of 4 out of possession. Defence and midfield 4s are only 5-10 metres apart and often on edge of own box.

It used to be 'lesser' teams set up like this to 'park the bus' against better teams and hope for 0-0. Now everyone from city and rs down get into that block within seconds of losing the ball. We do not have the quick thinking or dynamism to move through midfield before the block in place and so we end up with nowhere to go except to the fullback on the halfway line and hope for the best.

Contrast with rs who move from back to front in seconds, and city who are more like us on deliberate building but then have the quality to slice through the block even when it appears so congested.

We are neither one thing nor the other and it results in static forwards and nowhere to go with the ball.

exactly, this league is doom for any team that plays possesion without quality.

Possession does not win games converting that into goals is what is required.

Possession football, no matter how good the squad, can be utterly tedious to watch. I much prefer to see the ball moved quickly, with quick direct movement from the players into positions where they can cause damage. Mix it up between short balls and long searching balls - keep the opposition guessing. In my mind that's how Kendall mk1 and Fergie"s Man U used to play and it was both successful and entertaining.

All our successful sides did it quick, no fannying about.
