He's only here for 2-3 years at most anyway, so I don't really see the point other than meaning we get a bit more compo for him when he moves on to his next job

You cant stop talented people bettering themselves, it's unnatural.
He'll be at the Nou Camp next season. It's just inevitable. They've seen what he's done with Everton - the signing of star players like Bolasie and Ashley Williams, the 50 odd points in a single season - and will be determined to get some of that Europa League action themselves.
You make a good point there. Koeman has stated a few times that it's not the right time to talk of him extending contracts. But IIRC doesn't he have precisely the amount of time Lukaku has left on his? One, he signs that contract. If he doesn't sign that contract then we need to sell the manager. It's simple, it's not so difficult in my opinion.

Doesn't exactly give anyone a strong moral bargaining position to persuade RL to stay on if the feller asking him to isn't prepared to lead the way.
Martinez had offers at the end of the first season, so I suppose BK moving to stop that was understandable. What couldn't be envisaged is that RM had no ability to manage a group of players who felt they could passive aggressively call the shots and work to rule for the last 18 months of his time here.Would you want us to go and give a whopping 5 year deal to Koeman yet though? After Martinez (whatever our differing perspective, and I know we are in a minority on here!) but one should learn that a good first season isn't necessarily enough for us to go jumping into huge long term deals.
As a broader point I think such an approach underpinned the weakness and terror of the Kenwright/Moyes era. We had a chairman who treated us like we were lucky to be a PL club and a manager who treated us that we should be thankful to him we were. On that miscalculation that we could never get another good manager in, we panicked after 1 strong season with Martinez and on reflection panicked with Moyes in giving him long term deals. I think it lead to an inertia in the squad and an acceptance from the top doing quite well was enough.
To me that approach was of a time. Koeman has done well this season. However lets see how he does next year, when he will arguably have a bigger job. If the worst happens and he leaves, then with the clout we now have we should be able to attract a higher calibre of target, (I'd love to see Favre).
So for me it's a wait until Christmas.

On Koeman: no, he is defo not worth the risk. But if you're Lukaku and listening to a man who has already stated he'd be a failure to finish his career here with Everton and is not prepared to hand him a lead by entertaining talk of an extension to his own spell here then you just dismiss Koeman as not a serious player in negotiations.
Yes thats true. Take your blue hate off though, was anything Koeman said untrue? Also is there anything Koeman can say to make Lukaku want to stay here? Even if things are going as well as I hoped they are, it seems hard to see Lukaku wanting to stay another season.
We need to be run like a cynical business as a football club and let EITC do all the nice happy positive PR stuff!
