Kind of related, someone just posted in a Everton facebook group: "Do you think Martinez will make us league contenders? I know it's mostly about money nowadays and it won't happen this season probably, but if we hold on to good form/players we may be up there! Anyone agree?"

The only answers he got were "No" and "no chance" from like 10 people, and someone seems to think we're still gonna get relegated.

So I'm asking the same question, do you think he could make us title contenders/regular top 4? Maybe not this year, but next/in a few seasons? Or at least achieve something in Europe and/or the cups?

I seem to remember that around this point last season we were lauding a stat that said we'd created more chances than any other side in Europe & we were averaged something daft like 20 shots per game.

& yet to read some of the comments on here, you'd think were playing like Stoke...

That said, I can see what Martinez is trying to achieve in terms of our playing style & it's already possible to see glimpses of what the future hopefully holds in spells during our games to date.

I just think the entire, "we were dull before, now we're ace" is a complete misnomer

Nope, nothing good happened between Martinez and the mighty 90's when we were ace. Well not from what I've read anyway.

For me - we were boss, we are still boss, but we have the potential to become more boss... although we may still become less boss... but the new boss thinks everythings boss which many think is more boss than the old boss attitude of nothings boss.

Doubtful for any of those things to be honest. But 4th isn't beyond the realm of possiblity.

We were playing very well last year early on under Moyes like you say - in fact, we were a few points better off IIRC.

But I think it isn't a misnomer to look at Moyes' reign over the last few years when answering this question. Martinez has clearly started off looking to play a certain style of football that was foreign to Moyes's style. Even when we were doing well last year, it wasn't the same as it was more of a direct, fast paced, bulldozer style of football that was enjoyable to watch purely because it was effective rather than because it was technically sound.

Same points total.

I mean it's obviously not guaranteed or anything, but I think that if we manage a few good results against the big boys, which we may be more than capable of doing, we're pretty much in for a top 6 finish this year, and if we do well in Europe - who knows!

Or am I being too optimistic and we're gonna get relegated? :(

There's the other thing as well - about 5 games have passed, the league isn't even "shaped" properly yet, and anything can happen...

Not having that mate, at times we were superb & some of our football was most definitely 'technically sound'

We all know Moyes would revert to type when the pressure was on & would shackle the players at times when we were ahead in a game - Norwich at home last season was one I particularly remember frustrating the life out of me. However, to say that some of our great play in recent seasons, was merely, fast paced, bulldozer stuff, is nowhere near the reality imo.

The stats say that we were the most improved side in the league to around this point last season - in terms of our passing game.....so the change was ongoing under Moyes.

I think Martinez has barely put a foot wrong yet though, so I don't want it to appear that I'm decrying what he's done so far, as I'm not & I'm definitely enjoying it, I'm merely trying to give it some sensible context.

We're gonna be top half for sure, we've got too good a squad not to, but our attack is a little mutted, we're still learning and our defence is well shakey, we've been lucky a lot and the opposiition for some reason seem to miss more easy chances than I've seen at ours for a long time.
Who knows, perhaps as well as a quality manager, perhaps Martinez is a lucky manager?
Just can't see how we can keep teams open chances out of nothing and hope to win something.

More importantly, whereas Lukaku will go back to strengthening Chelsea, I am sure they will spend a shed load. We on the other hand will spend pennies or minus figures in our pursuit of his replacement. For that reason we will remain very much an outside bet for winning anything.

Perhaps pessamistic, but that's how I see us at the moment, pretty much around 8th to 4th, but if we get 4tha couple of times, and get into the CL playoffs... we will suddenly start having a little bit of spending prowess and all could change.

I thought this, but apparently the other teams playing at the same time as us are also getting three points for winning games too. I'm not sure if we can compete.

Then we beat them on the football pitch, we beat them on the training ground, we follow them home and we beat them in their homes, we track down their familys and hold them to ransom, we start a war like no other war and whilst we fight, we know in our hearts, that this is the way to win a title.
