Alan Ball, Joe Mercer, Tommy Lawton

Alan Ball was a rare error from Harry Catterick - mind you he had form with The Vision. Someone's got the famous piccy of the protestor with the placard as their avatar...But Bally's departure was the beginning of the end of that side and the start of 14 long barren years.

Of course, that would never happen no.......oh

Gary Lineker definitely absolute brilliant striker who did it whereever he went

Joe Parkinson as well, my hero during my younger years as a wee teenager

VDM.

What? He's still with us?

Seriously, Tommy Gravesen before he went to Madrid.

Also a big shout out to those who said Matteo Ferrari. The guy was absolute class when he wasn't hurt. He could have been big for us.

A real flare player.Never settled down due to a change of management and a reported fall out with Gordon Lee

arl fella used to go to sauna/ health club where he went, people used to get him going just by merely mentioning gordon lee, hates him to this apparently

I would put Gary Lineker against ANY striker in the world at that time and when he left after just one season, it was a big let down.
I wish he would have stayed for a couple more seasons who knows what we may have won.
He was a goal machine by modern standards.

we won the league either side of him though, in the year he was with us we changed our style of play and the midfield didnt generate as many goals, we were close to winning everything with him as well like.

steve mcmahon, the r/s detested him when he played for us.

From 60s7early 70s - Alex Young, Alan Ball, Howard Kendal - none of them wanted to go. Johnson was a red though and did.

Mid-late 70s - Duncan McKenzie I don't think had any more to give. He was a heavy smoker, hated training and retired at 32.
Ken McNaught - did though - he went on to win a European Cup with Villa.

80s - Kevin Richardson and Derek Mountfield.
Andy Gray - interesting to think how he would have fared as an impact substitute if more than one sub had been allowed.
Peter reid - managed another 4 seasons in the top flight after being stupidly cast off
Lineker - obviously, what was Kendal thinking?

More recently - Beardsely, Ferguson, Hutchison and Speed's departures and Tommy Gravesen's mid season flit were all unnecessary, avoidable and detrimental to the team's performance even they weren't all quite in the same league as some of the others I've listed.

Im made up Gravesen went mate. We wouldnt have Arteta otherwise.

Pretty sure that two subs were allowed back in the day of Andy Gray too like. Numbers 12 & 14 (Harper and Richardson).
