Players you still can't believe played for us

Signing Royston Drenthe

Played for real Madrid, only time I'd seen him play he scored an absolutely worldy.

Knew he was ridiculously fast when at a time Moyes only liked slow players.

Wow how wrong was I

Don't think so
If I remember correctly both Ginola and Cantona were dominating the individual awards in the UK in the mid to late nineties, but were totally ignored by the then French manager Aime Jacquet. I recall that he felt they would upset the dressing room balance, which I could understand tbf.

Both players would have walked into any team in the world at the time, but France won the world cup in 98 so I guess Jacquet was proved right. Still can't believe that a team with Christophe Dugarry as the sole striker could win the world cup.

Quite obvious but Wayne Rooney!
Seeing what he's done in the game, unfortunately for Utd shows he was a special talent and he was ours for a time.
That said, he peaked way too early and is finished now, at 31. There's no way he should ever have been made England (or United) captain and he should be nowhere near the England squad any more. He was pretty good between 18 - 28 though, and that's a good 10 years, so fair play.

To be fair they were relative nobodies when we signed them, as far as I can remember.

Sure Materazzi went on to win the WC, but Dacourt didn't amount to much after he left us. Didn't rate him that much myself either.

Gazza, Hughes, Ginola - absolutely disgraceful signings. Let's hope we never have to revisit days like that ever again.

He only played in the Champions league for about 6 years, won 2 serie A titles, and couple of cups and got 21 France caps, mate.

Opposite ends of the scale but:

- Andrei Kanchelskis. Absolutely unreal talent and a steal at 5m from United. Gutted he didn't stay very long. World class player, the most talented player I've seen play for us in 30 years.

- Sander Westerveld. Doesn't get much lower than the desperate signing of an ex-Liverpool reject.

When I seen the thread title - Andrei was the first to come into my mind as well. The ability of this player was unbelievable and stemming from that class he was arrogant as well. Remember him standing on the ball!!!!!! Wish we had someone like him now.
