PL place target for the rest of the season

Where do we need to finish for the season now to be acceptable?

There's a fresh start to the season starting from today. We stand at 13th. There are 24 games to be played - so just under 2/3rds of the season left.

We find ourselves still with a squad who have underperformed, but who have somehow in the last 5 games dragged us 5 places up the table.

Confidence has been rocked and we're still shaky, and we have tough games to come. But we have a few players on the verge of a return to first team action and we have a chance in the January window to add an attacker and defenders to the squad.

What should be our PL target this season?
As high as possible.

Mathematically can we still win the league?

If not, a European place minimum.

Steady!!

Good win today, with a solid performance.

We have teams ahead of us like Leicester, Watford and Burnley who I think will struggle to hold us off.

Maybe if 7th qualifies for the EL again we can get there, but to be honest I dont think we can afford to qualify for it.

Last two managers things started to crack when we got into that tournament and couldn't manage the workload.

7th without a EL spot would be preferable - though I still think we have some choppy waters ahead to overcome.

So aim straight for CL then?

If we’re gonna struggle with Europe we may as well go big.

I think a European spot should be in our grasp, if , and its a big if, we get the right personnel in, in January.

I personally think Sam is a good fit for us, he has a massive point to prove to the whole of football, that he can, actually, boss a big team.

Lets be honest, this is his first and possibly his last chance with a team that genuinely has a chance of breaking the so called " top 6".

With Moshiri's wedge behind him its sh1t or bust time for him.

Nothing will be acceptable other than going for European spots.

What's possible is another matter. Even if we scrape out of the gutter and finish top 10, it's a failure of a season.

We still need to be at 20 points from 19 games to be well on track for safety (even though I think we will do 45+ easily).

Would certainly be hoping to be at 24 points from 19, which as mentioned previously:

When we finished 4th we got 19 points from 19 games in the run in.

Last season we had a far-from-earth shattering 27 points from 19 games. The year before, 26 points. 2014 / 2015 we had 21 points!!

If we win three of the next four though all talk of a poor start to the season goes right out the window, weirdly.

Chelsea had a similarly-poor start a couple of years ago, recovered then won the league the following season.

I think we should do that, so as long as we stay up, it doesn’t matter how high up we finish this year considering we should win the league next season.

If the spuds continue their poor form (lucky to even draw today), 6th might be up for grabs.
Long way off yet of course. 2 wins is nowt but a good recovery.
