My point in the prior post was I hope that Brands and co. aren't saying "we can't know how it'll work in our system until he gets here."

While I am 1 of those who think that the the influence and importance of Gueye has been 1 of the biggest overstatements of recent years, I do think there is a requirement to sign at least 1 midfielder who can stick a foot in.

I would just like whoever it is we sign to not just be the "Gueye replacement", whose value is based solely on yards covered and tackles attempted.

I want whoever it is to also have a bit of quality on the ball. A bit of guile, a bit of discipline. And leadership. Someone to take responsibility, set a tempo. And who knows, maybe even get the odd goal.

Do these players even exist any more? Is that too much to ask?

I personally don't think these players exist or if they do they hide quite well.

In your old money your 6 and 8 would be different, but they could both do most things, they would just excel at different things, yin and yang.

Nowadays I find most players excel in certain areas, like they can tackle, they can create, they can drive, they can pass, they can shoot.

I mean MOST midfields play with a 3, a tackler, a driver and your door unlocker.

I do think we need somebody to plug gaps, but I also think we need somebody to unlock doors, its a major problem with 442.

I can’t see Ancelotti going to a 3 in midfield. I think Gomes will get next season to try and live up to the hype. Or will be sold

I didn’t say 3 in midfield full time but he does adjust depending on the game.
