So what do you guys make of this? How can SA expect to even think of doing this is just un-fathomable! It will never happen and I am certain FIFA would step in. I know you have to be proud of your nationality, but the SAFA is just plain stupid and are embarrassing the country of South Africa.

I agree, I like how they say its to avoid embarrasement at the World Cup just like at the ACN.

Pienaar should just retire it's obvious they're on about him. They didn't give a crap about Benni McCarthy during the ACN.

I notice a number of things about this article.

1. It is a suggestion from a government minister. FIFA take very strong exception to interference of its associations from Government, and could even ban the team from competing if its seen as being "Government control".

2. No FIFA regulation has been mentioned. I doubt very much if one exists that would allow for such a sitation to happen.

3. South Africa is will need to be pretty rich to do this. No club will pay a player for 2 years while they are not playing for them, and assuming we purchase Pienaar, the registration rests with Everton, not South Africa.

A silly idea from a controlling minister who knows nothing about football, much like our politicians over here. A non starter.

They would lose the rights to the World Cup, government interference of the worst kind, total bollocks(n)(n)(n)

Spot on Black Toffee.

I think that most of the time, it's that "government interference" that keeps some of the African nations from really excelling on the world stage.

I had that thought in my mind when I posted this, thinking back on FIFA threatening Spain with action if the government interfered over there. This would be inteferance on a ridiculous level. For the Sports Minister to even suggest something like this shows their contempt for FIFA and the regualtions in place.

They've been talking about it for a while here, but it will NEVER happen. Local club managers have also complained about it and say its a completely ridiculous idea. This country is just so so so worried of being knocked out during the group stages that they'll pay/do anything.

...like host a World Cup so that they're assured of playing in it?

(not knocking that however as that's what we did in '94)

It's a serious suggestion (in that he really means it - no April Fools). Clearly it won't happen for all kinds of reasons. There are the obvious reasons (clubs, salaries, etc.). Additionally, he proposes "nationalising" 50 players, but as only 22 make the world cup squad that would leave 28 out in the cold, having sacrificed their club careers. What about players losing form between now and the WC? What about new and up and coming players, not selected in the 50, but in better form than them 2 years later?

What does worry me in terms of Pienaar, though, is that I can foresee them managing to get dispensation from FIFA to gather their WC squad a few months in advance of the tournament. If so, we could end up losing Pienaar for, say, the last 4 months of the 2009/2010 season - and that's a big problem, because that's the year we'll win the Premier League.

No smilies because I'm not kidding.
