Pienaar

I personally will be absolutely delighted to see Pienaar back but the 'business strategy' of the whole deal is frankly crazy. to allow a player to run his contract down to six months and refuse to give him the wages he's asked for whilst giving more to another player (a fact of which Pienaar was clearly aware) then to sell him , before loaning him back then buying him for almost twice what we sold him for when he has almost zero sell on value whilst I imagine he new wages will almost certainly be what he asked or in the first place (if not more) not to mention the ancillary fees to agents etc.... This is a player we'll have signed four times if you count the two loan signings and who has played I think 104 of his last 114 league games for us and who we effectively loaned to spurs for 6months (actually spent at spurs) for a cost to us of about £2m.

I'll be really pleased to see Pienaar back and I think he's vital for our side & I certainly don't want to take any shine of what any of us feel when he arrives but if you look at it dispassionately as a business/transfer strategy it's absolutely crazy! However if you look at the difference he's made to our side when he's been in it that the positive that we have to keep in mind.

I agree to a an extent mate, that said i think there are three parties involved in any deal, the player prob was attracted by the bright lights of London, CL football, confidence in his own ability more wonga etc, his agent saw fees, we felt we couldnt make a loss on a player who had a history of winding down his contract and aboviously had a different wage budget - that money comes from somewhere.

I think its fair to reflect on what happened in hindsight and say it was a mistake - but i think you can say that for every party involved, being reasonable.

Anyway ive got what i wanted this summer with no hugely detrimental outs - so im not arsed about anyone else coming in - though i believe we expect more signings.

I think that last paragraph is spot on. I always defend agents and say they work for the players etc.. But with Pienaar his actual agent (not the bloke who usually appears on the telly) is someone he's had since he was a very young lad in a very troubled & challenging environment so he had a lot more influence than most agents have on their players. I think unlike the difficulties we had getting Arteta to sign (which was more about ambition than money) Pienaar just wanted his wars nd if we'd offered he'd have signed.

On a positive I'm told Jelavic absolutely loves playing with Pienaar and has been 'nagging' about getting him back as soon as and I'd imagine that's a view shared by most of the side.

Speaking a lot of sense in here mate.

Finance-wise it's a stupid move.
Football-wise it's a great move.

Those knocking the fee for his age have to remember we're signing someone who's proven as guaranteed to fit perfectly into our team, as opposed to taking a risk on a player who might not fit our setup (anyone remember that Bily-a-something-something?)

Very very pleased to hear that!! :)
Welcome home Steven!
This was a must..i don't care about financial aspects in this one :)

Now! Lets sign some new guys too! Would be ace like if we would sign more

It's just good luck mate I occasionally blindly stumbled into a good point, good luck rather than good management (y)

Haha, don't do yourself a disservice mate!

Anyway, I think what Pienaar does for us next season will decide whether people focus on the good or the bad of the deal. If he's as effective as he was early this year then we'll soon forget about the money, so fingers crossed.

Glad to hear Jelavic likes him too, I just hope when you said "nagging" it wasn't him getting above his station....

The Pienaar agent situation always seems weird to me mate, ive heard quotes of three, agents have to make a living mate i understand that and dont necessarily begrudge it but they are factors in deals.

I do believe the Jan he left, we were in big trouble, i think we overspent our budget hugely on new deals and were desperate for wages and loan fees - if i remember remeber correctly we got rid of Yak, Vaughan and a few others. In that context we prob couldnt afford Pienaar and an improved deal - whic i think is fair to critise as poor management. I think though everyone had a low threshold for the move to happen, Spurs, Pienaar, Everton and his agent/s. TBH i didnt think he was worth Arteta wonga at the time.

Thankfully hindsight has worked in our favour on this occasion, made up hes back, its worth it for me, when you see Park, Obertan, Wright Phillips and one or two others going for the fees they have considering we got 2.5mill in the first place. So what about 1,5mill of a loss for four years of Pienaar - worth it for me.

No I don't think so more "what's happening with Steven ?" , "when is Steven coming?" and the like just every day or so I think

Greg O'Keefe confirmed it.

Medical on Monday, all being well signing completed on Tuesday.

Do we have to give any credit to the lad who started the "Breaking News" thread? Tuesday was a v specific day for him to pick and it's now been confirmed that Tuesday is indeed the day

The lad said he broke the news about Tevez and Adebayor before the British media, this could be proved right if someone can be arsed searching the internet for it
