Pienaar

It was strange that he only got a three year contract.

I'd be gutted to see him leave, fantastic player and by far our most hardworking. He's got so much energy.

Agreed. He had a a bit of a dip for a few months, and I was actually a bit sore with him. But as the season went on, it turned out that he was a saving grace for the club. I wouldn't want to lose him.

I think Pienaar is ambitious, which is why he only signed a 3 year contract. I remember pointing that out at the time, to be met with howls of protest, as though I was somehow putting a downer on things.

If he wants a pay rise, I'm happy with that. My guess is that he's paid around the Everton average at the moment. If that is the case, I would expect him to move up a bit, given he's one of half a dozen key Everton players.

Ive re-read it and this keeps hitting me in the face :

He added: “I have played in a number of the best leagues in the world, and it has always been my ambition to test myself in La Liga.

“For a player of my type, La Liga will always be an attraction and to play in the Champions League again would be a real thrill.

Don't worry about it, lid. If Pienaar does want to get to the top, that means he'll play his ass off here. My view is to tie him down to 4 years asap, which would put us in the driving seat should a "bigger" club come knocking at the door. It's just bullshit, nothing to worry about.

So he performed better at the end of the season, hmmmmmm. Isnt that normally the time when pay raises or transfers are made.

Well, he also stepped up his play when it was needed most. We needed someone to provide some energy and daring in the midfield and he stepped in. So, he should get a sore treatment only because his performance improved when it was needed most? I think not.

I won't fault him if he gets a great offer to move to Spain - why shouldn't he go? Hopefully, he would want to stay at Everton but I don't think anyone would begrudge him if he left for a better situation. Now if he leaves for big $$$ to be a squad player, let the howling begin!:D

Arteta have serious thoughts about playing in La Liga sometime as well, but he has stated that that is in the future, not now. Just because a player says that he'd like to play in a league doesn't mean he will move there the next week or jump at the first opportunity.

I'd love for us to offer Pienaar a longer deal, he has earned it with his performances this season and with only 2 years left of his contract other clubs will start sniffing around if we don't.

Strange that, I thought exactly the same.

Im glad somebody else saw it.

I would hate to lose him, he falls under the same group that I put Lescott in. I mean I dont think he wants to leave, hes just trying to get more money, nothing wrong with that I suppose. But other people are quick to have a go at Mbia for the same thing really.

It's not the same as M'Bia at all. M'Bia made himself sound like a complete tit, with his claims that he needed to feed his family and how he felt he would be valued in the PL (but clearly not at Rennes). He came across as a cheap little conman. Pienaar comes across as ambitious. There is a world of difference between the approaches so far taken.

Only the words are different tho really. They both are saying they want more money, if their current clubs can give them more money they will stay, if not they are off on their bikes.

We've no reason to assume that Pienaar has any more intent than he showed in his statement, which is to secure a good deal. M'Bia tried to con Rennes or Everton, or both. At least Pienaar has the intelligence and grace to say what he means, instead of stoking up a load of bullshit. At this time, it looks like the club knows where it stands with Pienaar. I doubt the same could be said over at Rennes with M'Bia.

M'Bia was saying he had Barca, Chelsea and Real all interested in him when they clearly werent to try and get a rise out of the club.

I'm all for players wanting to get more money, but because we werent "that" interested in him, he turned around and gave the old "well, better clubs are after me blah blah" spiel.

And this all came from him, not an agent etc, from the horses mouth....then stayed at Rennes when no one was interested saying "I love Rennes, why would I leave" or some respects.

Pienaar just says he'd like to play in La Liga and Champions League footy. He's got a 10mill price tag so get in line.

Holding out for more money is normal, Football is a sport to them, a hobby but first of all a job which only lasts till they are approx 35, Mbia did make himself sound like a tit but in all fairness he's got a point. by saying this however i still think all those people who pay players 75k+ a week are complete ****s, it forces everyone's wages and transfer fees up

I would love for Pienaar to stay, if he leaves he'll be incredibly tough to replace, and we would surely as hell not be challenging the top 4 next year, even if we do get someone else, that player wouldnt be as integrated as our south african is now
Give him the wage raise, he deserves it, he's shown loyalty to everton and i reckon is worth what he asks, he doesnt look or sound like an unreasonable man
