Ronald Koeman's preparations for the new season have been severely disrupted after Phil Jagielka’s hamstring problems resurfaced.

Everton’s captain missed much of the end of last season with a tear in his hamstring - he was only able to play in the FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United with a painkilling injection - and that partly contributed to him missing out on England’s Euro 2016 squad.

Jagielka had been looking to start the campaign afresh under new manager Koeman but he has been forced on to the sidelines after he was injured in training at Finch Farm.

The Everton captain (left) suffered the injury while training with Everton at their Finch Farm base

He will miss Saturday’s friendly at Barnsley, as will John Stones who has a minor fitness problem that will prevent him lining up against his former club.

There is no indication yet as to how severe Jagielka’s injury is but Koeman can ill-afford for it to be serious given that Stones remains the target of interest from Manchester City and Ramiro Funes Mori is going to the Olympics with Argentina.

Jagielka needed a painkilling injection to play in Everton's FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United

Strengthening the squad is a priority for Koeman but his search for a No1 goalkeeper will have to move away from Kasper Schmeichel owing to the terms Leicester City imposed after Everton poached Steve Walsh to make him their new Director of Football.

Aside from £2million in compensation, Leicester inserted a clause that prevents Everton signing any of the champions’ players which has ruled out any prospect of Koeman signing Schmeichel, a goalkeeper he admires.

Daily Fail is incorrect there. Funes Mori is not going to Olympics.

It'll be interesting to see if Jags will still be captain under Koeman. I'm not sure he'll be first choice for much longer.

Break the bank to get Koulibaly in as Stones replacement, and go try to get Blind off United for a decent fee to give us a lot more depth

Blind is very underrated & whilst physically he isn't the best his football intelligence often saves him + he is like buying 3 players left back centre half & centre mid

Agree, get him in - doubt he's got much future at United, got a connection to Koeman already, good player and would be bloody cheap compared to some of the dross around for massive fees

Koeman may also at times go 3 at the back.
his passing is first class & as he has often played left back so isn't scared of being dragged out wide which can be the downfall of the system if you have players whom are scared of being dragged wide

Similarly Koulibaly has played a fair few times at right back as well, which is another reason he'd be a great fit if we could get him in
