By far the best left back I have seen in an EFC shirt(didn't see Ramon Wilson),mad as a box of frogs off it!!He lived by me in Ainsdale when he played for us,always saw him "out and about"in fact the week after he'd signed for us as a young man about townlolI was in the old West End Bar in Southport, getting a round in,I was aware the fella next to me was our new signing,"Alright Pat,welcome to the blues"says I,no response just stared at melol, knowing he was a Londoner,I foolishly say"Who's your favourite London team Pat?"Pyscho's response?"Fackin'Millwall, now fack off" which I did sharpishlollollol

The only two wingers I can ever recall getting the better of him, funnily enough our own pat Nevin playing for Chelsea, they beat us 4-3 I think at goodison, and the speed merchant at forest, franz Carr.:)

As other people have said, Bailey was a class act at left back and I was surprised when Pat replaced him. Still remember standing in the Paddock for his first game and thinking "That's why he bought him". Awesome.
By the way, Pat is now doing great work for Everton In The Community. and is an absolute gentleman

The celebrations at the end of the Norwich match!

Remember being at that match and thinking we were going to batter them after scoring so early, but having to go through the rest of game fully expecting us to slip up . Also remember whilst celebrating looking at all the Norwich fans who'd hung on to witness our joy, it felt great. Never thinking it would be our last for so long.

Known for his....well, his tendency for homicidal violence, but was some player. Any of us that we're lucky enough to witness the great times of the mid 80"s will have nothing but affection for psycho Pat.
He also gave speedy such a crack during the Chelsea game it was heard right round the ground, the ref wasn't watching, there was a loud bang, the crowd went "oooooh" and that little rat was laid out cold.
A fearless and fast left back who was involved in many a goal and was also super dependable.
Brilliant player. That foul on Speedy is one of my abiding memories because it happened right in front of where I was stood on the Paddock, so I witnessed it in full gory detail. Most effective elbow I've ever seen. Speedy was totally sparked out and had to be substituted about 10 mins later. Any other player could have sustained brain damage, but fortunately it was Speedy.

John Bailey was a big favourite but all was forgotten once Pat pulled on the jersey. One of the first names on the team sheet and never gave less than 100%. There was always some opposition snide, who us as fans would love to be playing against and end them. Pat sensed this, call it a spidey sense and would often oblige.
I've seen players get as far away as possible from Pat, even switching positions as they, and the entire crowd, knew what was coming.

I was in the paddock as well. I remember people looking at each other, open mouthed, wondering just how he got away with it. There was a crack and an echo....then a cheer once Pat got the all clear.

My other memory of the paddock is when Marwood did Inchy, again, right in front of us and can still remember the sound.

Nev was always my hero but Pat ran him close, a genuine hardman (not a modern day Henderson jarg one) and a fine defender in two positions. Another one of Howard's gems.

Pity that his demons -and Mandy Smith - ruined his career and derailed his life.
