Telford-Feb-85

Player Valuation: £6m
Lost in the mists of time now and I have either never known the answer or have forgotten it, but why did we sign Pat Nevin when we had Steven and Sheedy? Looking at the next season it looks like after Nevins initial injury that they tried to squeeze all three into the starting eleven. Great player but I never understood why we bought him and whether it had any bearing on Tricky leaving?

Just wondered if anyone else knows, probably unlikely that anyone else cares in fairness.

cheers.

My memory might be befuddled by the mists of time, but I thought we got Nevin after Steven was on his way. Not a bad replacement- but notvas good as tricky Trev.

You know what, this 89-94 period was really weird for me, and the whole thing is foggy. I remember Colin Harvey being sacked while I was listening to Radio City and they played 'There She goes' by the La's and then there was this whole weird Peter Beardsley phase and Warzchya, Preki, Ward?, Johnson, Ablett, Stuart McCall phase of players and during that time Pat Nevin too. In the post 1990 phase to me seeing the squad that won the league in the late 80s just didn't match. All of this is in hindsight cos I was only 12 at the time so even more foggy. But I thought Nevin was part of that 90-94 weird phase for me

The mind and memory play tricks. The team following the title winning team with good wingers and Cottee and Sharp should have gone onto good things, it just didn't work out. Think there were some good enough if not great players, they just didn't gell at all.

I have this thought that we always played 442 right through the whole period, but not sure we did now even under Howard in the 80's

Thanks.

We bought him in 88 after Chelsea were relegated - after he was player of the year for them 2 years running. He scored the winner vs Norwich in the 89 semi to get us to the final. Scored 20 goals in 130 odd appearances. Was never gonna replace Tricky though. The glorious 80's side had just broken up - so his timing was unfortunte. He was a great little player - but we were on the decline. Think he fell out with Howard too so he was gone by 92. Decent for us if not spectacular.
