I did not see all that much hype around it so I did not think it was overrated, but I am fairly oblivious to movies and pop culture. I'll have to watch it again because I do not remember his assaulting anyone.

Titanic had the greatest plot twist in film history. I thought everyone was happy and enjoying life, and that the poor cheesehead was going to live happily ever after with the refined Englishwoman. Then BOOM! Iceberg.

Not to me. Although there was humour in the book, Bilbo came across more reserved and dignified. Martin Freeman's characters always have a slight humour through stupidity/slapstick stance that I feel does injustice to how I interepted Bilbo. Having said that, I did think Martin Freemans' acting was spot on, just the wrong typecast for Bilbo

I see. I had roughly the same interpretation of Bilbo as you but also appreciated Peter Jackson's take on him. Sheltered and awkward Hobbit that goes out and experiences the real world. Then throughout his adventure he becomes increasingly more dignified. I also liked the guy that played Thorin and the other guy that played Thranduil.
