Our midfield far too slow

The lack of athleticism in the midfield has been a frustration all season. But also agree with the people who have talked about a bit of fight and effort going a long way to mitigating these short comings. On Sunday this was sadly missing. What’s your reaction Carlo?

It is too slow and it's been built to play a 433. To play 442 you need two beast like athletes to go up and down like Capoue and Docoure. Gomes might be capable alongside the right DM. Morgan is limited but can do that one job of sitting but isn't mobile enough to get around the pitch. But we are both out numbered and out fought and yesterday we looked old in midfield and well off if.

Ancelotti’s Napoli rarely played 2 wide players. Quite a lot of the time he had a Ruiz or Zelinski wide. I wonder if that’s what he will do with us in time.

Buying a wide striker who can get you double figure goals. Abs on the other side a midfielder that can help the 2 centre mids. And what would this do for Bernard or Iwobi moving forward.

Why some here won’t like to hear this, but I can see Bernard leaving 28 in September, a chance to make a profit on him. And probably more suited to other leagues

and nobody makes proper right or left midfielders now. Trevor Steven, Kanchelskis, Giggs, Lee Sharpe, all these types of players are from the past now> I think even Dowell could have seen an opportunity as a left sided attacker or midfielder and really worked on his strength and pace and changed a little. I know it's easier said than done, but players need to see the opportunity. Again with DCL, even though he still has limitations, yhou can't help but admire that summer where he bulked up and the last one where he was getting personal training. his mates should learn from that!

Yeah the days of Jason Wilcox and Stuart Ripley on the wings are long gone.

Napoli played more of a 4-2-1-2-2 formation with a diamond midfield when I watched them. That required a holding midfielder who slipped in between the centre-halves when needed and then dictated play from deep. The attacking midfield could become the 3rd forward when needed (Insigne). The formation is very flexible but requires the right players. I'd hazard a guess that only Gomes in our midfield comes close to being the type of player Carlo wants.
