Our attendances at home

Nothing changes. It was a standing joke.

They've always been at it. It started in the late 60's and reached ( IMO ) it's peak in the early to mid 70's.

Was it to bilk the players out of their attendance bonus???

Waiting for the crowd to disperse they would give the attendance...it was the biggest laugh of the day, especially if the result was not too hot.

Capacity say 50K, a quick scan of the ground during the game; well over 3/4's full, estimated attendance 38K...

Todays attendance was 32,378...

Hoots of disbelief all round, 5K lots of cash that the taxman never sees, it was all cash at the door and cash is hard to trace

This.

I remember those days vividly you could hardly move in the Street end you might see the odd seat in the stands empty but for anything like a big game the place was chocca. Symptomatic of the unawareness of the board, fans love to boast about their fan base and Liverpool publishing attendance figures a few thousand more than us just reinforced the growing seperation of the 2 clubs to a wider audience.

Everton have documented history of this ended up in trouble with the tax man over it - late 20s I think.

If we had a new stadium, better views,no restricted views, better catering facilities, same approximate location.

How many supporters would we attract, would the average crowd numbers increase substantially.
Is the lack of facilities or the lack of fans that is holding us back ?

Assuming ticket prices remained broadly similar I think we'd see an uplift of averaging in the low 40s in that scenario, with 45/46 possible for the likes of Liverpool.

I agree with this. City's attendances rose from about 32k to 46k when they moved to their new stadium and they certainly didn't/don't have a bigger fanbase than us. That might have changed a bit now if you include all the glory hunters but their genuine match going support isn't as big as ours.

It's a bit off for the club to give a £1 discount for obstructed views though. If tickets with obstructed views were £30-£35 i'm sure we would be near to selling out. To pay £42 for a normal ticket and £41 for an obstructed view isn't right.

That has been an issue for years. Unless its a big game who is going to pay near enough full price for an obstructed view ticket, especially when you dont know how bad the obstruction is

Maybe some of you who cannot make the match, could count the unsold seats
on the O/S choose your seat ticket page. Just a thought.

there were quite a few right at the back of GSE and also on the Top Balcony

The only empty seats were obstructed ones. A quick approximation is that GP has around 30 pillars giving onstructed views in various tiers of the stadium. I think you'd be hard pushed to say there are generally 100+ empty behind each of them. So on this basis 36,000 seemed a lowish attendance on Saturday.

Pretty embarrassing if chelsea couldn't sell out considering their fans had subsidized travel for this game

They sold out well before the game. But like Arsenal have been known for, some of their fans probably have money to burn and buy tickets for the credits rather than to attend the game.

Unless it's a really big game, there are loads of bad obstructed views that remain empty in the Upper Gwladys. Must be the same at the back of the Lower Bullens and the back of the Main Stand.

Chelsea's away following hasn't always been crap, I can remember them selling out and making loads of noise in the old Park End in the early 90's a good few times, night games as well.

Quite a few empty seats among the Chelsea fans, but before they come into the money there was hell of a lot less of them.

Its off topic I know but for for those of us old enough to remember many many pre Abramovich years from the '70s on it will always be impossible to regard Chelsea as a "Big club". I know money moves the goalposts but they will always be a minnow.
