I dont dismiss it, I relegate it to second most important element. Of course a horse is guided around the course, but they are the ones jumping fences and can and do adapt to what's in front of them and surmounting them.

It's fundamentally different than other events. Two different animals combining.

The field is so strung out, how can riders even 50m back make it up to get over the line?

Daft, but having watched a fair few in the Velodrome this Olympics to the uneducated daft applies to all of them.
