The super heavyweight final in the boxing has an interesting back story. The Uzbek is a professional boxer 8-0 with 8 KOs. In 2019 he KO'd Torrez (the other finalist from the USA) in the quarter finals of the world championships.

At the time it was quite controversial as Torrez was 20 years old and fairly inexperienced whereas Jalo.lov was 6-0 as a professional at the time.

Torrez has clearly improved massively in the past 2 years but its still a big ask against Jalo.lov who has won 37 in a row in the amateurs since 2017.

How come the GB cycling team are struggling so much now in the velodrome?

I know they were mired with their connection to Sky at one point, and there's been a dramatic drop off in their performance.

A horse? In an equine sport?

Well thats brand new news.
If you reckon the riders just sit on them, go and give it a go.
Take the gold won by Maher the other day: he stated he had to get on that horse because it was the best horse. It's the best horse because it can adjust for any errors in judgement that the rider might make.

They are decision makers. That's why the gold for a show jumper is not the same for most other athletes where the mastery of competitors and the situation is all theirs.

In a sporting context, its really no different than the fastest runner in a relay team making up the seconds the slowest one lost. As in, a partnership.

I am no lover of equine sports, nor of "Horsey" folk, but to dismiss the input of the riders is a nonsense.

I dont dismiss it, I relegate it to second most important element. Of course a horse is guided around the course, but they are the ones jumping fences and can and do adapt to what's in front of them and surmounting them.

It's fundamentally different than other events. Two different animals combining.
