Not enough Japanese pop culture references in that opening ceremony imo. Pretty understated - they could've gone completely bonkers with it and chose not to. Oh well.

It's not really a very Japanese thing to do. You all would have Mr. Bean and James Bond at your opening ceremony and pretend to throw the Queen out of a plane. This is your sense of humor.

This is not how the Japanese think.

The real game of the opening ceremonies is to listen to what the commentators say, and don't say, about what we all see. For instance, South Sudan had two athletes, one male and one female. Unlike the other countries with mixed-gender delegations, the man held the flag alone and the woman walked a full pace behind waving a little miniature flag.

The commentators let that one pass.

Nope. It would be handy. I could make a lot of money as a consultant if I understood them all.

I have a reasonably good handle on Britain and Japan by virtue of study. There are others I have a decent handle on.

For the rest, I infer from observation.
