….as I’ve pointed out to you previously with that ‘65 team, its always been the way.
No as I pointed out to you our championship team had 7 youth reserve players in that team the big star payment players were Bally & Kendall - the rest Tommy Wright, Colin Harvey, Brian Labone , John Hurst, Jimmy Husband , Alan Whittle, Joe Royle - apart from Labby all the rest were in their youth years or early 20s ...

Harry Catterick's- he had the foresight that even back then, transfers would balloon as they did & his long youth policy paid off that season ....

I agree hard to see it now, with the European world invasion etc & the Sky monies in the game - sad really that only SIX clubs outside the Prem are solvent financially .....

…I laugh because the discussion is like Groundhog Day, you compare the 60’s with now when they are incomparable. Back then every team had a nucleus of home grown talent, transfers only happened if a club wanted a player out, hence every team had a number of one-club players.

Every team visiting Goodison had a star player, remember Gordon West saying you were told how much money you’d earn and whether you were getting another contract or sold. No player power, that situation has turned upside down.

All teams recruited youngsters, Everton recruited youngsters very well hence the likes of Husband from Newcastle area, Kenyon and Hurst from Fylde. Today, we don’t have a conveyer belt of local talent because youngsters don’t play to the extent we did. The game has become global and often the best young players come from where street football is still prevalent.
