I just missed Vernon as a supporter (started going in 69). He was a hero of my old man. Even more than Alex Young.

I was lucky. My first game was in 1968 v Stoke City (the week before the '68 Cup Final) and Roy Vernon was playing for Stoke.

Pat Van Den Hauwe Defender. Age 24 (until 16 Dec ’85). Born Dendermonde. He joined the Toffees from Birmingham in a £100,000 deal in September 1984. He subsequently made his Welsh international debut in April that season. Not only that, but he chose Wales on the recommendations of Neville Southall and Kevin Ratcliffe. In the absence of Derek Mountfield, Pat spent much of the 1985/86 season in the centre of the Everton defence, playing 40 League matches -
