Oh for another 'Inchy' moment!

I was there as well mate on Gwladys Street it is amazing how many people use to tell you they were as well .

It was a rare event for me to stand on the Street End. I was a bit short of money. Sharpy headed on in from a corner in the dying seconds. From a corner. I definitely was there. It’s easier for me to list the games I wasn’t at Goodison (when I was able to go - ie not work commitments)

The 3rd round Stoke away game was the most important for me.

After Coventry 0-0 at home in front of 13k we had the 3rd round of the cup which was massive back then.
I went, I reckon we had about 7/8k behind the goal.

I wasn't expecting much, but 3rd round of the cup was like the first game of the season now after 8 new signings these days.
Nobody gave a monkeys where you finished in the league if you didnt win it - but getting to the cup final was massive.

For some reason the everton fans (probably drunk) were singing like crazy from 30 mins before kick off.

All the players talk about Howard just opening a window and saying `listen to that', `now go and give them something'.

I am almost in tears thinking about it.

We played with complete commitment, I mostly remember Reidy running round like a headless chicken tackling anaything that moved, then charging forward (Oh to have anything resembling him as a player at our club now).

We won, the fans treated like we had won the league. It felt a bit silly and over the top but something was happening!!

That kevin brock back pass was a crucial point in our season without a doubt. However, go back to November and the league cup game vs Coventry, in front of less than 10,000 fans. We go 1 down, and then Howard brings on Peter Reid as sub. Cue Adrian Heath equalising, and Sharp scoring the winner in the last 5 minutes. That was the turning point for me. Inchy had 3 goals from his haul that season which will go down as etched in the memory of all of us who were lucky to see them...the 2 mentioned, and the SF goal vs Southampton....Magic !!
Some one had a thread about your favourite/memorable games at Goodison and that game was one of mine,we had been poor all season, the leaflets were flying round, the ground was empty and we were 1-0 down, then for some reason the crowd started getting behind the team,as you say Inchy equalised, then Sharpy, who was basically playing on one leg scored the winner

That Inchy moment was massive of course (and so was the fans’ support at Stoke away in the 3rd of the FA Cup) but I always give a lot of credit to a last minute save by Big Nev in a one on one with Tony Cascarino (massive RS by the way!) in the first replay against Gillingham. We went through after a second replay beating them 3-0 away eventually. We went on to win that cup whereas we lost the League Cup. And it was not on the TV so hardly anyone saw it at all.
But the most people at the time saw the importance of the Oxford escape. We were dire that night!!! I think from then on HK dropped David Johnson and settled on combinations of Sharp, Heath and Gray according to the match. IIRC Gray was Cup-tied for the league cup.
My brother went down to Gillingham for the first game first replay( I couldn't get the time off )In a car with a few other lads and they were in a boozer before and after the game , the landlord offered to let stay in the pub until the second replay which was back at Gillingham a week later(we lost the toss) they couldn't stay but were back there for the third game.
Great gesture from the landlord southerners are just like us really only they talk funny.

Nice story that mate! I was working near Watford at the time so got to both replays having gone up with ESCLA for the original game. We should have won the original game about 6-0 but couldn’t score. Went well in the end with a comfortable 3-0 win but I was pretty relieved that we got that second replay!!
The journey back into London was punctuated by lads getting off the train at three or four stops to have scuffles with the locals which was quite amusing at the time!! They were not quite as friendly as that landlord!! Mind you, how much would they have drunk in a week?!?!?

Thinking about it now as I am sure the landlords offer was not all inclusive the offer may not have been as magnanimous as I always thought and had in fact been the workings of a shrewd business brain.

Bloody Southerners

In my lifetime, the closest thing that I can think of to one of these moments was Marcus Bent's goal to make it 1-3 away at Palace, August 2004.

Rooney had either left or was on the verge of leaving, and it seemed as though relegation was finally upon us after finishing 17th the season before. However, this ended up being the start of the run that led to finishing 4th (2nd or 3rd going into the Chelsea game in December, if I'm remembering correctly).

I was listening to Sharpy on the radio on Wednesday talking about the Howard’s Way thing, and he was saying how much abuse Inchy got from the fans. every match the announcer would call the names of the team out and everybody got a cheer except Inchy who got booed every game. When asked what the other players thought about that he said “we were just glad it wasn’t us they were booing”. It is easy to forget how young and fragile that team was. Had Inchy been a weaker man, he might have folded under that pressure, Had Carter had less bottle he would have flung HK under the bus and none of it would have happened! It is incredible how many little incidences have to align before something great can occur. Which explains why they happen so rarely, and also explains why certain clubs have constant success. They buy character (by luck or by design) and the rest of us do not!

An under the fire manager, an under performing team. Another season of misguided aspirations. Another season of crash and burn.
And then 'that' goal. It seemed to unlock our belief and we never looked back, so much so that within eighteen months we were lauded as the best team in Europe.
Will we ever get another 'Inchy' moment or was it, as I fear, a once in a lifetime occurrence.
Must be honest, I'm getting too old and too tired with all the reminiscing and really feel for the younger generation who have still to experience those kind of highs.
I'd take a Pip moment right now.

What a wonderful time that was. I was 18 when we won the the cup in 84. A great time to be young and support Everton. I hope the youngsters get to experience something like it. League cup will do.

Just finished the Mersey Millionaires book { a great read for all blues} and they claim the Blackpool game away where we got beat and a Certain Alan Ball for Blackpool ran ring around us, and the Catt famously stumbled when blues fans approached him angry after the game was a big turn around for our fortunes as we went on to win the FA Cup in 1966....

Arsenal had us over 1-4 the first game the week before, seem to remember we went 1-0 down to Palace then Gravesen turned the game.
