With the way the modern game is played. Having a few number 10' in your team especially playing 1 up top seems to be the trend.

The typical number 10' playing in the EPL are;

Chelsea:
Hazard
Willian
Oscar
Shurrle?

Man City:
Nasri
Silva
Milner
Jovetic
Aguero (also striker)

Liverpool:
Coutinho
Suarez (also striker)
Sterling
Moses (loan)

Arsenal:
Cazorla
Ramsay
Podolski
Walcott
Oxlade-Chamberlain

Tottenham and United also have a lot of number 10':

Rooney
Mata
Januzaj
Nani
Young
Eriksen
Lamela

To name a few

Playing the number 10 role you can operate anywhere across the midfield to attack. I think we need to strengthen this area for next season.

Everton:
Barkley
Naismith
Mirallas
Osman?
Deulofeu (gone)
Pienaar (most suited to number 10 but has faded this season)

"no. 10" is just about the dumbest example of football nuspeak out there.

Why not "no.8"?

That was the inside forward on the right hand side and it is the same beast.

"Schemers" as they were sometimes called.

Names which are much more self explanatory than the pretentious "no. 10".

"no. 10" is like sommat Glen Hoddle or Brent came up with to show off their footballing pseudo credentials.

Seriously though a lot of them are not 'number 10s'. The only real 10s there are Coutinho, Silva, Nasri, Cazorla, Oscar and Hazard - and they play wide most of the time anyway.

A 'number 10' is someone who plays in behind the forward and links up with the midfield, not just someone with a bit of skill.

John Hurst was a great number ten for us a forward who HC turned into a 2nd central defender but when he strode out of defence he scored some good goals , and made some good goals - the most underrated no 10 perhaps to play for the blues over a long period!

What a rude and pointless post.

Why even bother replying?

@tsdoddy I think what you mean is the position in which barkley is currently most suited to. This is also the only role where osman offers anything at all.

So with 2 players for this rolw its covered. What we really need is someone alongside McCarthy. Barry being brought in has allowed the full backs the cover needed to bomb forward so I imagine he or a sinilar type will be signed.

Also will be interesting to see ledson develop.

One thing to bear in mind is that mirallas is the only capable winger we have now qso it could be possible for a number 10 'type' to come in as a wide player in a similar way chelsea have used some of their attacking midfielders in the past 2 seasons.

Rooney, sherringham, Zola, Berkamp... That's what I tend to think of as natural 10's.

I think No.10's have changed a little bit over the last few years. They used to be strikers with skill and guile. Players who played a little deeper than there strike partner instead of up along side them.

These days more and more midfielders are playing the role (Barkley's, Countiniho, mata etc) even skillfull wingers (mirallas's, Silvia's, hazzard's etc)

One thing for sure, it's a very important posistion these days, whether your playing a striker there or midfielder.

there are three types i guess

classic no.10 - deft tocuhes and skill instead of pace
hole player - runner with the ball , also runs into space
and the useless winger - wide player who was lost his pace and will to live (eg pienaar)

No. 10 isn't particularly pretentious, False Nine however.
