Noel Gallagher quits Oasis

The beatles had a much bigger opportunity in those days than bands have now. They started off playing rock & roll really, and things progressed from there, but I think it's unfair to use the Beatles as a yard stick for modern day talent.

To be fair to Oasis, they have offered a mixture of music from heavy to ballad, and have had a pretty good run in a market well known for fly by night bands.

Radiohead have done that though, which is why I think they probably stand alone amongst modern bands in that pantheon of 'greatness'. I think the White Stripes are superb for instance but wouldn't class them as great, even though I think Jack has more talent in his little finger than Liam and Noel combined. Horses for courses isn't it?

All about personal taste. (y)
I've been a musician for over 30 years, and have learnt that a little of everything can be appreciated, but a lot of one thing needs a closed mind.

Maybe not, but its always about progression, they still fill out major concert venues and they still have fairly huge record sales. For me they are a huge band. I mean how long have they been going for now? Nearly 30 years?

Sure, they're certainly popular, but then so are Westlife (or have they quit now?). Popularity doesn't always equate to greatness.

Velvet Underground for instance were never popular when they were recording but have nevertheless proved hugely influential.

Exactly. Music is all about mood. Sometimes a bit of Bob Dylan or Nina Simone is just what the doctor ordered. Other times something more upbeat. Had myself a Cherry Poppin' Daddies day yesterday for instance

Ian Brown is sh*t though . Thankgod he had a hell of a band behind him . That and the fact he looks like a monkey

Liam nicked Ians monkey walk and his mannerisms

Wouldnt agree that Brownie is [Poor language removed] even though he hasnt got the best voices ( Top bloke met him at the match a few times)
