Shame we didn't get to sign him earlier , we only had him at the twilight of his career.....a very decent keeper imo

I remember a 0-0 derby... Some of the saves where unreal... South all like... Remember gerrard running onto a loose ball I'm the box.... Time... Clear line of sight... Drilled it from about 8 yards low into the bottom corner somehow nige saved it

Oh look another thread designed to pull Howards pants down.

The thread was made for Nigel Martyn and what a good keeper he was. A very good goalkeeper.

Make your mind up!!

I made it to talk about Big Nige, but you can understand how Howard gets talked about, as Martyn was the most recent keeper we had who was better than him (in most people's opinion, I think), so naturally comparisons will be drawn.

Anyway, hopefully we can sign the next Martyn some day soon. Goalkeepers can be the least exciting signings but a look at De Gea at United shows that they can win you as many points as any other player.

I don't see it that way. Equally, "oh look, another post refusing to see any fault in Tim Howard".

Nigel Martyn was a good goalie for us and we probably wouldn't have got that 4th spot without him.

We can appreciate players without a detrimental effect on the current players.

to be honest there is quite a few players who you rate in hindsight years later.

I remember thinking Martyn was top class at the time. some of the saves he made and the way he went about governing at the back was incredible, obviously since the greatest left us.

I was basically saying that that is how the thread will turn out eventually.

Unless we get extremely lucky (as we were when we stumbled over Martyn) and find a gem, nabbing a goalkeeper like De Gea costs you a few bob. For the upcoming season i would prefer that money to be spent strengthening elsewhere.

De Gea was an extreme example, but there are plenty of great keepers who didn't cost much.

It depends on our budget I guess. I think GK is a priority position as think Howard's cost us too many points, but regardless of one's opinion on Howard, it's clear we'll need to spend there very soon as he's getting on.

That was the reason we signed Robles. Signing Robles and have him understudy for 2 years before taking over the reigns and claiming the No 1 shirt. Makes no sense signing a keeper who is 23/24 years old as a backup to the current No 1 at your club and then the club going out and spending a few bob on a new No 1. So that area has already been addressed.

You're making quite an assumption there. I think many would doubt that Martinez sees Robles as our long term number 1.

Howard is gash though so its a fair point.

Didn't he say recently that the goalkeeper position is strong and it doesn't need addressing basically. Martinez see's Robles as our future No 1 and will get that opportunity to make it his own. Whether he steps up with the consistency to make it his own is another debate.

He was talking about this window. I took that to mean that he sees Howard as our number 1 for at least another season.

Martinez showed a complete lack of faith in Robles when he immediately dropped him after good performances, the second Howard was back.
