All I can do is comment on his actions in public and what he’s said. Without being there in person or have knowledge of what’s happened behind the scenes, it’s difficult to do anything else.

At the very least the man has spoken out over the years about the club and what’s transpired and we can’t say that about a lot of former players.

Well exactly, I haven’t asked you to do any different or said that you’re wrong? All I’m saying is people who know him have suggested that there’s slightly more to it than we might think - nothing sinister, just a 2 way issue rather than a 1 way issue - and so it’s worth bearing in mind. Whether they’re right or not I can’t comment because I don’t know him, but they know him better than we do so I don’t discount their opinions.

Fascinating and energising to see Neville Southall and Trevor Steven on the "My Goodison" series speak the unvarnished truth that Everton has NOT been a serious club for over 30 years.

There isn't enough of this.

These players lived at the top - they saw Everton as the top club in Europe and made it the top club. They are on a different planet to 99% of the players who followed.

If anybody wants to know Kenwright's true legacy at Everton, you just need to listen to these two in the media this week. He wasn't mentioned - but it is quite clear that under his watch we became also-rans and second-rate.

The very fact that they can go on prominent media and speak so critically - and factually - about the club since their time shows you that the climate has changed and the old regime is gone. We have an incredible opportunity now to change things for the better. Southall speaks of even the fans being behind the curve on where we should be (and he is completely correct). The way he took umbrage with the supporter saying Ndiaye was a great player was beautiful. Standards.

Big Nev reckoned Moyes was ok in the interim but not for the longer term. He didn't think Moyes could attract the level of player we need, that top players would not want to play for him.

….i never warmed to Southall the man but he was a remarkable goalkeeper. I used to go to Bellefield a fair bit during those days and I was always amazed at Mick Lyons absolutely blasting the ball at him from literally 8 yards. He was saving most, I wondered how it never broke his wrist.

I went to the filming and recording of this interview with Neville.

The filming was for 2 hours and some of the context has been edited out. He talked a lot about Kendall and Harvey and their standards plus their quality on the training pitch even though they were the coaches not players. He also remarked on how Colin Harvey pushed himself everyday despite his arthritic hips and knees and all the players understood what it meant to be Everton players and the standards required. None of this made the final edit nor his recollection of Goodison’s greatest night against Bayern Munich which he described as when “the whole club,players and fans came together as one”.

I agree with a lot of the sentiment of what Southall says but his style of communication is probably likely to rub a few people up the wrong way as it lacks nuance…he can be too literal at times.
I think the interviewer and the unfunny comedian(not Sam Avery) were a bit scared of him when he got in the groove on some of his bugbears(not shown in the final edit).

It was a fascinating 2 hours and he was very good with all the fans who spoke to him during the recording breaks plus loads of photos with him even with me!

Big Nev is his own man and that brings positives and negatives but I am glad to be able to say I saw him at his peak as a goalkeeper and his little cameo rolling back the years in the 1995 FA Cup final.

No, we had Hutchison (Kendall mk 3) and Collins (Walter Smith) so was about 2 years after we signed Barmby. From what i remember, it was early on in the 98/99 season and we didnt win or score at home till November when we beat Newcastle, the day we sold Ferguson.

Not every player will dovetail with every manager. Arteta and Pienaar were bombed out of their previous teams because they were 'difficult characters' and didn't fancy the style of the managers they had there...
Recently we've had Kean and Lookman in the side here and there was a perception that they weren't pulling their weight and were not quite as committed as required.
Find me a fighter, a player with a point to prove, a career to build or rebuild, someone not prepared to bow out early in disgrace, some hunger.

Happy clappy, kumbaya singing, tofu munching niceties... I've lost where I was going here...
