The team needed freshening up, more changes to the starting 11 but it wasn’t and we inevitably lost.

The football is terrible, backwards & sideways lethargic passing and the breaking through the lines that Lampard mentioned counts for very little if your midfielders and wingers can’t complete a forward pass.

Our central midfield is massively overhyped and leaving our defenders exposed.

Two games in a row not one shot on target is pathetic. A massive 4 league games coming up before the World Cup break.

Only 8 goals from 11 game is a real concern. What Lampard & Thelwell were thinking with their half arsed effort on the last day of the transfer window to bring another attacker/winger in. It was clear for all to see that we were going to struggle after the first 4/5 games to score goals.

If you remember this fixture from last season, they kicked us off the park and generally bullied their way to victory. At least this time we actually stood up to them. I can see progress but if we don't start scoring we're in big trouble. Only Forest and maybe Bournemouth are clearly worse than we are.

2 mins highlights reel on sky this morning is a very poor reflection on Everton. All of it is Newcastle attacks, not one chance or even pass from a blue shirt. And poor body language worryingly back and evident.

And Coleman ripped on all bar one attack shown. We look every inch a bottom of table bunch resigned to their fate.

We frustrated them for most of the first half and a lapse by Gray - not getting back and picking up Almiron cost us. We can't have wide players not getting back. Also think Gordon contributed very little. We looked better in the second half when it looked like 4-2-3-1 with Iwobi given a free role to chance the ball down and move around to receive the ball. If we start with this we need two wider players that will offer more than Gray and Gordon. Someone said play a diamond in midfield, this may be a good idea. Gueye at the base with Onana and Garner with Iwobi at the top, with DCL and Maupay up top. That will give the full backs a chance to provide the width.

I'd like to see Gray and Gordon dropped next match and a 4-3-1-2. Garner or Doucoure in a midfielder 3 with Iwobi as a number 10 behind Dom and Maupay. This formation isn't working

Howe’s game plan was to hit us hard and see who was up for the fight. Sadly our forwards and midfield weren’t up to it.

The purpose is to analyze the match beyond the final score. You don't have to like it or participate, but pretending it's all fake is just accepting ignorance. Some people want to understand the game while others are just here for the emotion. Both are fine.
They are not "understanding" the game though. They are understanding what they want to understand and creating narratives that are not really there.

You should never overthink football, it doesn't require it, it is a wonderfully simple game, that's why people like it.

Looked leggy to me and lacking in the dynamism needed to beat a hard working Newcastle who are predominantly vulnerable on the counter. Few times Onana carried it out on the jog when I thought if he drived with it we might have caused a few problems.

Missing Patterson big time, he offers such a threat going forward.

Tough one choosing MoM, thought we were all rubbish tbf.

Need to unearth an attacking threat from somewhere, none of our wingers offer much at the moment and our midfield is a little bit too much run and not quite enough guile or creativity. Anyone in the youth set up worth a shot?

Our forwards need to shoot at every opportunity. Instead we had Gray, Gordon, Dom and Maupay when he came on, picking up the ball and trying to force their way into the area. Take a shot at goal when the opportunity arises and you may get a deflection or a rebound to a team mate who can have a go. That's all Newcastle did - nothing fancy, take a pot shot and see what happens. Their goal came from what was, in my opinion, a speculative punt that went over JP into the net.
