Ha, it's less about being a train nerd and more to do with maths. Sandhills currently has a capacity to facilitate circa 3,000 passengers per hour due to access.

This is based on the width of the platforms combined with the single entryway through the passage to get onto the platforms. These are limiting factors.

When you consider the new Class 777s capacity x by the trains per hour (24 in peak, with 450-500 max per train), you're looking at 10,000+ available space.

Now, obviously you have to factor in the trains holding some capacity already, but Sandhills will struggle to fill all the available spaces available due to constraints.

This is where having an additional station will increase how many people, per hour, can get onto the trains. Imagine putting a ½” hose on the end of 1" hose.

There would be the same amount of water available, but less space to get it out, if that makes sense?

I'd imagine there's more chance of them creating a new platform(s) on one or both sides rather than a new station.
