Neville Southall on transfers

The great thing about trusting young players like Vellios and Duffy and Barkley is you can sell a player keeping them out of the team and not have to buy to replace them.

The downside is that they may be a bit poo as 1st team regulars and our team could massively suffer and we have sold the personnel we need to cover for this.

If you are going to sacrifice anyone, Leighton Baines may be the one to go. You’ve got Phil Neville to fill in (at left-back)

baines is 28 now if we hold on much longer his value will drop a lot. it would hurt but can we really let players lose all their value before getting rid of them??? we need to sell to buy so we should sell while the value is high
All we need to do to make that deal improve our club is find a player who is younger and better than Baines who wouldn't leave us for a bigger club. Easy enough.

Baines value to us on the pitch > Baines value to us in funds for new players (i.e. are we better off with Heitinga, Distin and Bily type players -- remember wages too -- than just Baines?). We'll never make the CL by selling all our best players. We have to hold on to them. We can raise funds by selling the likes of Rodwell, Heitinga and other fringe players (whose value goes up by the way as you become a CL-contender and other clubs think your bench players are massive upgrades for them). It makes no sense to sell Baines -- are you hoping to buy a player who will one day will be as good as Baines? The best case scenario is treading water and that doesn't account for bad buys (which even the best managers make). The only thing we need to sell is Everton itself ... and Anichebe of course.

Not really a shock is it? He's been a loose cannon talking shite for years.

Agree 100%. I loved Southall as a player, and for around three seasons he was to my mind the best keeper in the world, but since he retired he has hardly been a success at anything, particularly talking about Everton. I will never forget his classic from a few years ago...'It would do Everton good to get relegated'. Utmost respect for his achievements as a player, but since he retired, he's lost his way.

I can see where he coming from, cos if we got a bid of around 25 million for Baines, it would be silly to turn it down as he is 28 and Moyes could buy 2 quality players with the money but we wont get a massive bid for him cos of his age.

Gotta love Neville.

Thought he'd have earned enough dough from football, but seemingly he's got his own business charging 50 quid a pop for email replies to questions, legend!

Nightmare with his transfer advice there though.

Fellaini is the one to go IMO. Massive money and personally with that kinda of $ we could replace aswell as add.

Baines is irreplaceable IMO.

I had been reduced to the same line of thinking when we were in utter disarray under Walter Smith...pure desperation in an effort for a way out of the endless cycle of sh*t. It can be easy to forget how dire it was, with no light on the horizon.
