I'm a bit of a train-spotter. Not a proper one as I'm not especially interested in trains or engineering, but train lines, closed lines / stations and the heritage of rail I find v exciting.
Every friday at 10.13am there is a train from Stockport to Stalybridge one way - the only service on the line. It's called a 'parliamentary service' - closing a rail line requires, or used to require, an act of parliament and was a regulatory headache for the train company. They find it cheaper just to run a skeleton service so the line is officially open, but closed for all intents and purposes.
Last year I took the morning off work and got this service with my 4 yo son

. An interesting 20 min train ride. The station buffet at Stalybridge is also worth a visit - listed building and normally has a few real ales on.
