Russell doesn't get enough credit, but it's hard to compare yesteryear with today. They only had 8 (?) teams and without modern player movement rules the teams weren't particularly balanced.
Still think he'd be great today. A friend compares him to Duncan, a highly skilled 4/5, which seems reasonable.
Oh, I know he's not the best ever, he was the beast of his day. MJ is best ever, but if ever rings come up, I just laugh. Bill Russell is like Nigel Tufnel. He goes to 11.
Slight tangent...
The thing that I will always give Red credit over Big Chief Triangle... the Celtics were absolutely moribund before he took over. Winning percentage of around .400, no winning seasons. 22-46 the season before.
He built that time from the ground up. He didn't take over a Bulls team with MJ or Lakers with Kobe and Shaq... he built it brick by brick into a juggernaut that won 8 straight titles and 11 in 13. (Also broke the color barrier, drafting the first African American player) Would have won a lot more than 11, instead turned the reins over to Bill Russell to serve as player/coach and moved just to exec.
My favorite bit between the two, though, is everyone loves/d Wilt, his 100 point game, his 50ppg average, etc. Even in his day Russell didn't get enough credit. When Wilt was signed to a then staggering $100,000 contract, Red turned around and offered Bill $100,001.
