In a way yes. He took advantage of the situation. There is a lesson about stronger and/or victorious sides not sewing the seeds of further unrest. Obviously Russia should be applying that now, but hopefully we will be paying heed when Russia is defeated.

We are all always reacting to events.

Oh I fully agree with hitting Russia hard. But I hope that they come back into the fold and Ukraine is free and safe as quickly as is possible.

Then we need to help Russia (and Belarus) thrive as an actual democracy and part of the international community as well as get Ukraine on its feet.

This did cross my mind a couple of days ago, China keeping a close eye on what happens here, with Taiwan in mind. Hopefully the response of the world to Russian aggression might make them think twice about going into Taiwan , but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I don't like NATO expanding east however it is clear that if it doesn't, the countries there will instead fall back under Russia's sphere of influence. I'd rather those countries be under NATO.

NATO and the USA wanted Russia to turn into Libya or Afghanistan post-Cold War. Obviously that would have suited them perfectly.

Russia however kept its nuclear arsenal. At that point any expansion should have been called off.
