Throwing Benitez and Ferguson into the argument is as flimsy an argument as it gets as you well know. Let’s just leave there eh mate! Patterson could be Roberto Carlos and you would still find faults with him.
I can assure you I wouldn't.

We ned all the good players we can get to get out of this mess. The fact of the matter he isn't a good player.

Dave Coleman has been out for what, 7 months, as much as I respect Seamus, he is not ready to start yet and you know it. Forget you're bitterness for a minute, Patterson needs games to prove whether he can make it here or not.
He'll start against Forest.

Ferguson didn't play him either.
Ferguson was hardly an Everton manager was he though, only a caretaker for a few games. In any case surely Ferguson's opinion wouldn't matter to you., if it didn't try to give some substance to your odd statement. What was it you called Ferguson? Useless and big galoot come to mind as two of your regular remarks about him, cone layer would be another, you really were scraping the bottom of the barrel to try to use Ferguson to justify your post.

Don't get me wrong Dave, i'm by no means convinced by Patterson, he definitely has a mistake in him, but, he is far less of a liability than Young. Young is absolutely finished at this level, his game has disintegrated this season at an alarming rate, the only comparable deterioration I have seen was Neville in his last season at Utd. At least he had the self awareness to realise he could no longer do it and he retired rather than keep on embarrassing himself.

Patterson's biggest errors flow from the fact that he has no sense of being aware of the danger around him. He's static when he needs to be on the move tracking attackers and he never gives a look around to demonstrate he's aware of the opposition.

Managers see this and they see it every day in training.

He just doesn't have that defender 'antenna'. And he likely never will.

Most modern day fullbacks don't though Dave, they are not taught with the priority to defend they are taught to get the ball up the line as quickly as possible.

I dont think many are saying Patterson is great but from my point of view he is better than Young and probably around where Coleman is, the difference is Coleman will only get worse and Patterson can only get better, whether he turns out to be a very good FB is anyone's guess but he has everything in his favour to improve.

He isn't improving, but that might be lack of games and a confidence issue.
He doesn't look fit to me , he is blowing for tugs when he runs back , maybe that why the manager seems to have little faith in him.
He will have to start showing something or his Everton career will not be a long one.
Looks to have it in him to be a decent player , just needs to show it now.

He's not improving but maybe that's because he's also not playing at all.

Shown good games and glimpses of at least some quality but he'll never be good for us (or at all) if we keep taking a hot dump on him by playing anyone ahead of him for the reason that Dyche doesn't like young players lol

Whereas Young's biggest errors stem from the fact that he can't run and is constantly caught out of position with no legs to get himself back in the game. Young also doesn't have that defenders instinct and never has had. He was a very good winger who was played as a wing back, but, defender's instinct, nah.

Spot on, this is even taught at kids and youth level.

The days of a full back " just being a defender " are well gone.

Same with centre halves - expected to be comfortable with the ball at kids and youth level.
