2023/24 Nathan Patterson

Patterson's recent crosses into the box have been interesting, let's see if others become more tuned to it.

If it turns out well, then we will have an attacking fullback who can actually defend.

Mate a good player crosses to where his team mates are not where he wants them to be. It's Patterson that needs the lesson.

And he's never had an issue wanting to attack. It's having some ability to defend that has him marked down by the relevant football experts.

When you put a cross in as a fullback the majority of the time your teammates are running into the box.

There’s a certain amount of guesswork involved. You’re not aiming for where they are when you kick the ball, you’re aiming for where you think they’re going to be.

A lot of the time if no one is obviously free it is just about putting it into a dangerous area and hoping someone connects with it.

I’ve seen enough from Patterson to think there’s a player in there. He’s young, improving and hopefully will come good for us.

When on the counter, players don't readily take up positions where the crosses land. They get there by running into spaces, and most of Patterson's crosses have been in good areas recently. His defending capability is not that bad to consider him a liability. He has shown that he is good when played next to Coady or Tarkowski.

Sorry but that was a brilliant cross. It’s a counter attack at pace. You don’t cross it in that scenario to where the player is, you play it ahead of them as they are also moving at pace and will get more power behind it. Playing it to where they are will mean they have to check their run, stop running, control it and have a load more work to do with the defender now ahead of them.

It was perfectly far enough that the keeper couldn’t come for it and just beyond the defender getting to it.

It’s you that needs a lesson if you can’t see it was a fantatic cross.

Young gets caught out, Coleman gets caught out, Trippier gets caught out

The PL is absolutely crammed with excellent attackers so all defenders get caught out on occasion

Otherwise there'd be a lot of very boring 0 - 0 draws

Although Patterson does need more game time and will benefit from experience I'm sure he'll still get caught out occasionally between now and the end of his PL career the same as every other defender in the league (from Sheffield United to Man City)

The only difference might be that "fans" of other clubs won't jump down their defenders throats when they're caught out a couple of times a game by some £51 million attacker of the class of Paqueta (not saying you have Exeter but some on here certainly have)

The repeated (fake?) over-expectation of a small number of the posters on this thread seem to totally contradict reality which is most probably why accusations of agendas have been made

On pretty much any other football forum this would be a total nothing thread with people occasionally commenting that he had a half decent game every so often

It's all been so bizarre that it's almost as if davek and his cronies are plants to create fake news/rage bait posts to increase the footfall of the website and increase its revenue

Next stop Swansea on loan in Jan. Its up to the lad then to knuckle down and learn his craft as a defender. If not then this time next year it'll be the Turkish second division or Dundee United more probably.
