which was another failure in management

Agreed, not sure what's gone on behind the scenes but Mirallas should start every game! Quite bizarre really to play Naismith or Barkley out of position over Mirallas. Lennon and Mirallas on either wing would give us so much more attacking threat

So we would be top 4 this season if Naismith hadn't been in the team? he is our 2nd top scorer this season remember

This thread stinks of confirmation bias! It's all been Naismith's fault lol
But he's also the reason so many of our attacks break down. He's not good enough especially when playing in any other formation other than a 4-4-2. He can't play as a loan striker and can't play on the wing or as a 10. As a 2nd striker he will always get goals and as a result useful from the bench when chasing the game or even when tactically it makes sense to play that way however that also requires dropping one DM so that there's not such a huge gulf between attack and defence.

I think another issue is that Roberto expected Barkley to step up and do the job of linking the play like Pienaar and be the playmaker.

In short it never really worked out like that and eventually Martinez had to take Ross of the wing and put him back in the centre. You can say it was bad management and it was but the reality is we had little on the bench to do anything else. The mistakes where made in pre-season - perhaps he was expecting Deulofeu back for this year.

Yeah I agree, second striker is his position. He is good coming off the bench as well, usually makes an impact. I think there are games where we could drop a DM and play two up top. McCarthy is capable of doing that role on his own against lesser teams.

We'll see what happens in the summer, I think Naismith has a role to play though. His work rate and commitment sets a good standard. Even as an impact sub, he's a great player to bring on against tiring defenders.

it's frustrating for the fans as well, as hit and miss as kev can be he improves us, feels very much like we are biting our nose off to spite our face

Surely the primary reason he isn't playing at the moment are his dodgy hamstrings? If he was fit but out of favour he would have still have played for Belgium over the international break, they would have wanted him at least on the bench for their important qualifier with Isreal and he didn't make the squad. He made our bench yesterday but probably not ideal to rush him back if he had only rejoined training recently.

If fit he should deffo be in the team.
Another who looks like they have fallen out with martinez

.....decent footballer is Naismith, simple as really. RM needs to ensure the team has the right balance and if that means leaving Naismith on the bench that's the way it should be. He's still a goodun to have around, though.
