I've been thinking a lot lately about my favourite albums, and what makes a truly fantastic record. Because to me, albums are more important than songs, and in modern popular music, making a good album is secondary to making a catchy song. Remember though, filler is the enemy!!

Anyway, seeing as the 5 star system is the arbitrary quality measurement for music, I'll use that as the face of my question. What albums do you guys think are near perfect/perfect; true 5 star albums? I'm talking albums that excel at what they do. Ones you really have no complaints about; where you wouldn't change a thing. Albums you can't live without.

Here's what I've come up with so far:

  • At the Drive-In - Relationship of Command
  • Biffy Clyro - Infinity Land & Puzzle
  • The Birthday Massacre - Nothing and Nowhere
  • Circa Survive - Juturna
  • Coheed and Cambria - Second Stage Turbine Blade
  • Crime In Stereo - Is Dead
  • David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars
  • The Dillinger Escape Plan - Miss Machine
  • The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin & Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
  • Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape
  • Green Day - Dookie
  • Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
  • Kylesa - Spiral Shadow
  • The Mars Volta - The Bedlam in Goliath
  • Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals
  • Metallica - Master of Puppets
  • Mew - Frengers
  • Muse - Showbiz
  • My Chemical Romance - I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love
  • Nirvana - In Utero & MTV Unplugged New York
  • Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
  • Radiohead - OK Computer & In Rainbows
  • Rolo Tomassi - Cosmology
  • Rush - 2112
  • Silversun Pickups - Carnavas
  • Scarling. - So Long, Scarecrow
  • Weezer - Pinkerton
  • The White Stripes - De Stijl, White Blood Cells, Elephant & Icky Thump )

There's almost definitely some I've forgotten, but if that list gets any bigger some people might think I'm just naming albums I like

Anywho... back to the more important issue; what albums do you guys think skirt the periphery of perfection? (y)

Im amazed at how much music you listen to. Anyways, for my much smaller list:

  • Rush - 2112 (Im actually holding the vinyl record right now)
  • Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy
  • Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

I just realized I just named some of my favorite albums, but they are my favorite because I view them as perfection.

I love REM's Losing My Religon and Automatic for the people. Ive had them so long and listened to them so many times that nowadays I find myself humming even the most unknown songs from myself to them, and loving it :)

I spend that much time listening to music I get uncomfortable when I'm not. Ambience drives me crazy especially.

Anyway, first two are boss shouts. Maiden's debut is far from perfect though, imo, although the song is ACE. Plus seeing:

Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden

on your ipod looks well cool. :P

Trivium did an excellent cover of it as well.

All fantastic shouts. Although I personally swerved the Beatles as I just didn't know where to begin!

Pink Floyd..Dark side of the moon

Pink Floyd.. Animals

Obvious as it is, I'd go for The Wall. That's the ultimate concept album.
