What the actually Christ is a regista?!???

Here miss.
Deep lying playmaker basically. Regista is just "director" (as in, he directs/dictates the play, you can see where I'm going with this) in Italian, hence the word for that position in Italian.

Pirlo and Xavi are good examples of that - playmakers that sit deep but aren't primarily there to tackle and stop attacks. There's usually a player whose role is pretty much only to do that next to them - Pirlo had Gattuso for his most successful years (imo), and Xavi had Busquets. We currently don't have a player like that, the closest to that being Arteta back in the day really.

So basically people are taking the piss for someone saying "deep lying playmaker" in a different language. Can't wait for megahead to come in, he's gonna have a field day with this.

you mean like Barry.

"deep lying playmaker"
Yeah, see him make assists all season, or spark attacks with precise long balls forward.

We play with 2 defensive midfielders to cover our full backs making runs upfield, we literally don't use the same system or anything to allow that type of player currently, unless we hinder our wide play. Last few times out McCarthy was deployed in a similar way, and Besic currently is closer to that role, but not Barry.

You've pretty much described Barry's role mate.

Ha someone mentioned the ' slipper' the other day . I had no idea what the hell a slipper was! Slipper .

Maybe they meant tony Hibbert, as he's getting older he's naturally developed from "the shoe" and become "the slipper"?

Yes and no. "Similar" being a keyword here, we're comparing Arteta/Pirlo/Xavi and Gareth Barry. The first 3 were pivots to the way their teams played, while Barry is there to take the ball off the opposition and lay it off to someone more creative, or retain possession by passing it back to the centre backs.

In a way, Besic/McCarthy are more the actual playmakers than Barry, as they also go forward quite a lot more, or offer passes in different positions, rather than just sticking to the centre of the pitch at nearly all times.

All opinions, but I see it the other way round. I think McCarthy especially may press high or look to break forward, but more often than not when he obtains possession he gives it to Barry to try and make the switch, open the game up, play to Roms feet, bring an advancing CB into the game etc etc. The reason Barry plays so deep is he is comfortable taking the ball from anyone in defence and is intelligent in making angles to receive passes from them. Ive never thought Martinez sees Barry as a typical, snappy David Batty type who's primary function is to win the ball.

I've been wrong before though. Lots.

you ever watched Barry play?

*just wondering*

He IS our pivot, he's the one putting his foot on the ball and spotting the forward passes.

McCarthy when he gets forward is there to press and keep the possession further up the pitch, not that creative. Barry is the one who sits back with the grand view and 'directs'.

Nah not saying only/primary function is to do that, but it's vital for the way we've set up (with the attacking full backs and all) that our two defensive mids defend a lot more, because of the open space left by the left and right back respectively.

Because of the way we play as well, though - it's vital for them to be able to actually pass, not just break up play. That's similar to a deep lying playmaker/regista role in that way only. Pirlo was usually very much relieved of those duties when he played, because he had Gattuso to win the ball (to use my previous example cuz I'm lazy), but he had to make the precise diagonal passes across the field, etc etc. Barry does have the vision, but I feel like his technique lets him down a lot in that respect - he sometimes looks like he's unable to kick a ball past 20m for some reason... I get it towards the end of the game as he's ancient, but it just seems... unnatural when he tries to make those passes lol

Then again this is my guestimation based on observation, as I'm not an actual football manager (YET HEY HO), nor am I living in Martinez' head to know the exact, specific way we've set up. For all I know we're both plebs and we're wrong.
