Moyes Watch @ Real Sociedad

But probably about 80% of his managerial career he's been around the top end of the table, albeit with a very inferior budget to his rivals.

Of course. What Moyes did do for us was fantastic. It's what he didn't and couldn't do afterwards that I am referring to.

Moyes's true strength is back to basics stuff, getting a team organised and getting the most out of not-so-brilliant players. That makes him far better suited to avoiding relegation than winning trophies.

Ultimately if a team were trying to avoid relegation then Moyes would be my top choice for manager. He rarely ever lost 2 games on the spin and instilled consistency and defensive fortitude in his teams. But when you're not the underdog, and you need to break down defences and beat most teams, he's not the man for the job.

I just don't get this. His teams generally finish at least above 75% of the others in the league, he's got to have been doing something right and winning games, you're making him sound like Sam Allardyce here when he's only ever been in one relegation scrape and the rest of the time his teams have done well even though they've been handicapped financially.

I'm not saying he spent most of his time in relegation battles, I'm saying that his managerial strengths suit the bottom end of the table more than the top end.

Seasons under Moyes were always a curve. We'd often start terribly, crumble under expectation, but then when things got rough he'd have us grinding out results and then building on that, rarely losing consecutive games, and then climbing to a comfortable league position.

Then expectation would rise for the next season... rinse and repeat.

When we started a season with expectation (same for him at United too) he didn't know what to do. He was more comfortable "taking a knife to a gunfight" than taking a gun to a knifefight. And I stand by that.

His best teams at Everton were defensively sound and with players like Arteta Pienaar Baines Osman Mirallas we had no problem unlocking the door especially at Goodison. We could absolutely dominate the fodder.

People like to make him sound like Tony Pulis but he built a club up from relegation battling every season to consistently qualifying for Europe. You can't do this just playing percentage football and most people know we didn't play that. If we did we'd never have improved. Instead we went from a long ball team to one who had threat from the full backs and midfield. Yakubu barely moved on season and we still gave him 20 goals on a plate. Gross gross revisionism when people say Moyes' sides couldn't play football.

The biggest irony of all is that one of the few managers who actually did something with time (his achievements with Everton) is now seemingly the only manager who should not be afforded any time. Martinez, Klopp, Van Gaal, all apparently deserve more time but Moyes gets 9 months at United and now is supposedly a terrible manager after not even a full seasons worth of games at Sociedad. What happens to 'judge him after three seasons' that we see being trotted out for other managers?

Sociedad knew exactly what they were getting. They were in disarray so wanted someone to save them from relegation and move them back towards Europe. He has done the first and he will undoubtedly so the second given time. Going beyond that will be problemsaric because Spain have three spaces out of four locked up already.
