Maybe it's an 'age thing'. As an older Evertonian, being a blue for me has been a real roller coaster ride.
I have seen us plunge depths and seen us scale the heights. I have seen us lift trophies and escape relegation on the last day of the season. I have seen managers sacked and felt the buzz of a new one installed - with all the optimism (misplaced or otherwise) of the 'new guy'.
To be fair, the vast majority of supporters of other good clubs have had similar rides. Compared to some though, our highs have been good ones, and we have, fortunately, never been relegated.
The current generation of young blues haven't experienced anything like this. The last 10 years have NOT been a 'roller coaster'. With few exceptions, each season has looked a bit like the other. Mediocrity, if you will. Nothing has been really dreadful overall, but there is no buzz for us fans.
But, what you've never had, you never miss. The younger blues think this is what supporting Everton (or any team for that matter) is about. Same old, same old - year in, year out - and it is killing the passion of a lot of fans.
I don't think losing hurts some fans as much as it does others. I don't think unattractive football is as much a turn-off for some fans as it is others.
I miss the 'new broom sweeps clean' that galvanises and unites the supporters. I have seen them come and seen them go. I miss the drama.
Has supporting Everton become like going to work for a place that's nothing to get excited about, but it pays the wages and 'at least it's a job'?
