The formation you play doesn't indicate how you approach the game tactically. You can play long ball with 4-4-2 or you could play down the wings, You might have two defensive midfielders or two attacking ones. Formations mean little with regards to how you approach the game tactically.
You say we panicked because we needed a goal before half time? Why didn't the manager use his HT to put it right? We played the whole second half the way we played the first. He was incapable of changing the game and countering Martinez set-up.
Heitinga got murdered by Kone(and everyone else this season) last time we played them and he's costing us at least a goal a game every game. Duffy's got a bit more to his game than getting his head on it. Only a fool would play Heitinga the way that bad bell has carried on all season.
Squad size is irrelevant as you said we don't play well when our best players don't perform.
When I pointed out that other sides best players play more and still perform you agreed. So is it squad size or fatigue for individuals?
Lots of the players you mention as lacking cover have been playing in cup games against lower league opposition too. Perhaps if Oviedo, Naismith, Barkley, Junior, Garbutt, Duffy, Mucha and the like aren't good enough to beat a side almost bottom of league 1, mid championship and Leyton Orient then he shouldn't have bought them and got rid as they'll never, ever be good enough for the PL.
Quite right, and they played the same way they have been all season, in fact, they've been playing the same way for well over 18 months now. It wasn't any surprise to us that a team that plays 3-4-2-1 focuses on exploiting the centre of the pitch - we just didn't play well.
We played Osman and Neville who can't run. If you can see it why can't Moyes. He's culpable there. If they were both at the very peak of thier game they'd still have been over-ran
Yes. And I'm not sure how much he could do to make them play better - a manager can alter tactics to change a game, but the tactics weren't necessarily the problem, when the likes of Baines and Pienaar struggle to make simple passes there's only so much words from a manager can do.
The 'tactic', long ball, was found out. He swapped one target man for another and had us carry on pumping the long ball in. Good managers can completely alter the flow of a game, the set-up of the team and the attitude at HT. Moyes couldn't. Baines and Pienaar weren't in the game, same for Coleman and Mirallas, because we played in a way that excludes them from it.
If he's not capable of identifying a problem in the first half and solving it by the second he's clearly not half as good as some would have us believe. If Pienaar couldn't make a 5yd pass why was he still on the pitch?
As I said earlier, I've been hugely critical of him, but would Duffy have prevented us from conceding 3 goals? Nah. For the first time in a few months, Heitinga wasn't the problem.
First one was a free header from a corner.
Well you've just made my point for me - our best players can't perform at their best every week, but we're not in a position to replace our best players with decent backups - so yes, squad size does matter, a lot.
No I didn't. You said our performance was due to fatigue of our best players. I pointed out that other players play more than them and perform at a consistent level. The problem was not fatigue, it was ineptitude. If it's fatigue we should still be shattered this week for Man City??? Bet we aren't.
I agreed that some clubs rely on some players more than we do - that doesn't mean those players don't suffer from fatigue though. Take Chelsea for example, they relied hugely on Lampard for many years, but if Lampard had a bad game, they had enough quality in the rest of the squad to make up for it. We simply don't have enough quality to make up for bad performances from the likes of Baines, Pienaar and Fellaini.
We've got a hell of a lot more quality and depth than Wigan. The old lack of quality argument doesn't stack up when Jordi Gomez is running the midfield and Gibson & Barkley are on the bench.
This is a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't - if Moyes rests key players for cup games and we are eliminated (which is a very real possibility), he's messed up. If he doesn't rest players which means they get fatigued later on in the season, he's messed up.
what would everyone's reaction be if he announced right now he was leaving?
Moyes 4 Stoke. Absolutlely perfect for each other.
1) The Stoke fans are sick of Pulis' anti-football. Moyes would seem like a tactical genius.
2) He'd have another cushy number as they are the kind of club who stick by their managers so long as the deliver 'success' or stability. Moyes likes a safe job.
3) The Stoke board would give him money to spend. More than Everton can. Not sure about his wages mind, but their Chairman would probably find it with some other betting related scam, I mean nocel betting product
4) The fans would love just missing out on Europe / Cups / beating the big boys - they revel in the plucky underdogs tag
MOYES 4 STOKE!
But can he get any vertically striped cardigans?
