Moyes "clarifies" contract position

To be honest, Lambert has probably actually ahcieved more in the first 7 years of his managerial career than Moyes did in his.

Getting Everton 4th was Moyes biggest achievment, but getting Norwich from bottom of League 1 to survival in the Premier league considering what an absolute shambles they were in at the time is arguably a better achievement.

Mind you, managerial sucess is all circumstancial. Di Matteo went 12 games with only one win at West Brom, but won the FA cup and Champions League with Chelsea. Does it make him gash, awesome or somewhere in between? Obviously any sensible person won't judge a manager purely on his record but will look at all the mitigating factors and circumstances in play.

I'm sure there has been several managers who has achieved similar in the last decade. No one has done anything like what we did in 04-05. Going from 17th to 4th in the premier league. That right there is a completely different ball game to winning a couple of promotions. Getting 4th place given the situation we were in before that season is by a country mile the greater achievement. Not even close.

This has always been my point (mainly in the boozer or on other sites) , it's all about timing and being in the right place. If we'd got di Matteo who'd have been happy but he was 'there' at Chelsea and has a cv bettered by only a couple of managers. If moyes had come up with Preston maybe he'd have been a nitemare in his first year sacked and been the new billy Davies . Owen coyly was at least considered for th spurs and lpool jobs but his star has fallen so badly he may be sacked before Christmas whilst can you imagine anyone in the top half appointing Rodgers after reading ?

If and when moyes goes we have no idea whole be the new rising star and whether this will be the 'right job' for them, how can anybody know how anybody will do when they come in that's why the ''no one can ever replace moyes", "look at Rodgers & lambert" and "coyle is crap and some wanted him" is something I just find annoying .

I'm completly with you mate, so many differing factors come into play to determine how good a job a manager is actually able to do at a club, and his ability is just one of them.

Personally I find the Moyes out, Coyle, Lambert, Rodgers, Brown, Holloway, Hughes in because they are much better shouts equally annoying.

There's an insular tint to english football that drives me mad. You would legitimately think from some discussions that they are only twenty managers and twenty mangerial positions in the world.

Great post.

One of the biggest factors in a manager having a successful career is timing. Deciding which club to join at the right time gives you almost as much chance to succeed as having talent.

I wouldn't argue that they are equally annoying mate, my stance is only ever that one day we will survive moyes' eventual & inevitable leaving . I have absolutely no desire to chase him out the door & I can't speak for others but for me this club is bigger than any individual be it moyes, Kendall , sharp, catterick or dean and we'll be here when all of them and both you and me have long since gone.

Been saying this forever mate. It sounds a bit bloodless and harsh, but they're all just hired hands who come and go. It's only the organisation that matters.

to be fair I think the fact that he's not signing a contract now is a sign of high expectations and ambition... think about it, he would only not want to die down a contract if he expected us to accomplish something this season.

if we had another disappointing mid table finish and 2 poor cup runs, theres a legitimate chance that, with the squad we now have, BK and the board would think a different (cheaper) manager would do just as well. The only reason for Moyes not wanting to tie down the contract in my opinion, is if he believes he can get us into either the Champions League or get us a trophy and prove that he is indispensable.

Like BK and the board care about any of that. Moyes balances the books with no budget, makes no waves and keeps the fans happy. They could give one how much he fails on the pitch as long as he produces the players who can be sold for the ten million pound profit that keeps the banks of our backs.
